Analysis of G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Copperhead #1:
First Impressions:
“It’s Copperhead. How good can it be?” Well, my friend, it’s pretty darn good. You’d be right to think that one of the Cobra characters with an incredibly niche specialty wouldn’t have much to work with. However, Howard Porter makes it work with a personal story fueled by diesel and sheer machismo.
Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):
The issue begins with Copperhead handily defeating a cadre of enemies to steal a special fuel cell for Cobra. Mission complete, he heads home to celebrate and drink away the memories that haunt him. When the weight of his past becomes too heavy, Copperhead deals with it the only way he knows how… with speed.
What follows is a succession of street races and competitions, each leading to a mysterious trophy that reminds Copperhead of his youth. By the end, the trophy is within reach, but there is no rest for the wicked when Cobra calls.
How is the story in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Copperhead #1?
The Sssilent Missions have been a mixed bag so far, but Howard Porter’s tale of personal angst and high-octane action is one of the top entries. Without a single word, you get a clear sense of Copperhead’s motivations, the way he chooses to act on those motivations, and the nature of his character by the end. The one minor takeback is the unclear connection between Copperhead’s past and the trophy. The main character stares painfully at a picture of (presumably) his father, but the design of the object in the photo doesn’t look the same as the trophy he pursues throughout the issue, so the connection falls flat.
How is the art in G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero – Sssilent Missions: Copperhead #1?
Porter pulls double-duty as pencil/ink artist, and he does a spectacular job in an action-heavy issue. The races are thrilling, the transitions from one competition to the next are as smooth as a Louisiana swamp, and the moments of emotional expression land perfectly.
Characters
As you would expect, Copperhead is the focal point of the issue, and his presence is impressively charismatic as a force to be reckoned with. Every opponent believes he or she has the upper hand until Copperhead throws them to the side, sometimes temporarily or other times permanently.
Originality & Concept Execution
Copperhead is one of the more obscure characters in G.I. Joe canon, but Porter gives the Cobra agent plenty of (wordless) personality and motivation to get you invested in his next mission. If the goal was to recast Copperhead in a new light and entice readers to want to know more, mission accomplished.
