Is GARGOYLES #11 Good?
Greg Weisman puts Goliath’s new status as an officially recognized citizen to good use in GARGOYLES #11. Mixing gargoyle-vs-mech action with a deathbed drama, the soap opera is just starting to get juicy.
When last we left the Gargoyles, Goliath won his hearing to be recognized as a citizen of NYC instead of as a monster to be hunted. Meanwhile, the lovers from opposing Crime Families were locked up in a cage by masked kidnappers. Now, Goliath is summoned to Vogel’s bedside as his health wanes while Brooklyn, Lexington, and Broadway stage a kidnapping rescue.
The recap above covers the broader plot developments in this issue, but there’s plenty more. Detective Maza gets pulled into an uncomfortable meeting with her superiors over her hidden relationship with the Gargoyles, and the (almost) warring Crime Families have started to figure out that Dino Dracon is the instigator in their feuds. Yeah, a lot is happening.
What’s great about GARGOYLES #11? Two key points are the highlights of this issue if you’re a fan of the series. First, the kidnapping scenario gets resolved with a reasonably satisfying rescue mission. Sometimes good old-fashioned Gargoyle heroics are just the thing needed to make a comic exciting.
Second, Goliath’s meeting with the Elder Vogel results in a status quo change that could have far-reaching implications for the Gargoyles. It’s unclear what, exactly, but it should be interesting.
What’s not so great about GARGOYLES #11? Yes, a lot is happening, and it gets to be too much in spots. For example, there’s an opening montage of the assorted Crime Family members talking on the phone to put the pieces together regarding Dino Dracon’s double-dealing, and the montage is a confused mess. If there weren’t so many subplots crammed into a single issue, a key revelation would have more time to develop clearly.
How’s the art? George Kambadais’s art is fine, as animation adaptations appear to be the best fit for his style. That said, the fight choreography during the kidnapping rescue is also a confusing mess, so the action highlight of this issue falls short.

Check out our GARGOYLES #9 review to find out how Goliath’s hearing went.
We begin with with Brooklyn, Lexington, and Broadway flying to the location where the kidnappers have their hostages stored. As they fly, we see a montage of assorted Crime Family members coming to the realization that Dino Dracon is behind all their troubles.
Meanwhile, Goliath is summoned to the bedside of Elder Vogel as the old man explains to his family and the Gargoyle what his Will states about his company’s ownership after he dies. We conclude the issue with a tricky fight, a surprising gift, and a family restored.

Final Thoughts

GARGOYLES #11 ends the kidnapping, starts the hunt for Dino Dracon, and gives Goliath a surprising new status quo. George Kambadais’s art style is a good fit for animation adaptations, and Weisman’s soap opera script gives readers plenty of twists and turns, but there are too many spots where the script and art are a mass of harried confusion.
