Was It Good?
DRAGON WHISPERER (VOL.2) #2 is a light, family-friendly adventure that puts Rosalinda on the path to finding the last dragon where she encounters dangerous resistance. Filles with imaginatively pleasing art, a fair bit of whimsy, and a slightly mature fight scene, this is the type of fantasy adventure that’s safe for kids and parents alike.
The high points of this issue are the whimsical, Harry Potter-esque fantasy moments as the story unfolds and the fantastic art by Fernandez.
Rosalinda and the crew of the Carina encounter quaint villages, talking animals, deadly assassins with steampunk accessories, and a cursed land covered with poisonous air and deadly thorn bushes. The steampunk elements of the story are obvious but not overpowering as the magical aspects (like a talking osprey) take center stage for the plot. Imagine a mix of Harry Potter whimsy in a Dora the Explorer type of adventure with a steampunk patina, and you get the general gist.
The pacing, dialog, and plot all move along smoothly. When the group encounters a team of assassins intent on stopping them, the threat feels serious, and the fight ends with an unexpected bit of gore. So, the comparisons to YA material are natural, but De Luca employs a mature edge when the scene calls for it.
Fernandez’s art style is a perfect fit for the tone in De Luca’s script. The linework is soft and pleasing, the colors pop with brightness, and the facial acting adds a hint of realism. In all, this is a rare case of writing and art working in perfect synchronicity.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Catch up on how the crew of the Carina received this quest in our DRAGON WHISPERER (VOL.2) #1 review.
We begin in the present with Rosalinda’s Q&A session where an audience member asks her to delve into her knowledge of Captain Faulk, the former and deceased captain of the Carina. Rosalinda recalls the next leg of the crew’s mission to rescue Obsidian, the last dragon, and how that mission brought them to the wastelands in Garn’s vision.
Before entering the hostile desert that takes them to the heart of their journey, a noxious and thorn-covered region called The Flats, the crew stops at the closest village for provisions. While there, Kip encounters and is increasingly assailed by an obnoxious osprey. As the team sets out into the desert toward The Flats, the osprey follows along, pecking at Kip and the supplies he carries.
Hours later, the crew stops at a roadside hostel only to find a trio of armed monks waiting. The assassin monks attack, but the crew holds them off with help from the osprey. The assassin monks retreat, but the crew is surprised to find the osprey talking after the battle. They’re more surprised to learn the osprey is the reincarnation of Carina’s former captain.
We conclude the issue with an explanation of the afterlife, awarning about killer monks and killer lands, and a history lesson on Obsidian’s upbringing.
