Was It Good?
DRAGON WHISPERER (VOL. 2) #1 starts a new journey for Rosalinda “Rosy” Eberhardt and the crew of The Carina as they wander the world looking for opportunities to use Rosy’s dragon whispering gifts to make peace between magical beasts and the human population. That’s a mouthful, and if you’re not familiar with the first volume, you may feel like you’re going to be lost. Rest assured, you won’t be. De Luca and Fernandez have crafted a wholesome tale that gives you what you need to know right up front and hops into the story without delay.
This first issue is light, hopeful, and filled with a spirit of good, clean excitement. The description doesn’t explicitly say this is a YA adventure, but it’s about as family-friendly as you can get. The main character, Rosy, projects an unflappable, wide-eyed optimism. Captain Peel, and the crew of The Carina, each have their flaws and strengths, but they tackle the adventure ahead with good cheer. And the adventure fits perfectly into the tone of the issue when Rosy receives word of a dragon in need of rescue.
On the writing execution, there’s really no flaw to speak of in this issue. The dialog gives each character a unique personality, and their manner of speaking matches the time and place. The pacing is excellent. The plot development is, admittedly, relaxed but not in a decompressed “wasting time” way. And the main conflict is developed clearly and concisely.
The art, likewise, is practically flawless for the material. The character styles are mildly cartoonish in that they have slightly oversized heads and eyes to make emotional expressions obvious. However, there’s plenty of detail in the costumes and settings, so don’t take “cartoonish” as a negative. The style suits the material and the tone of the story to a tee.
If you’re up for a fantasy adventure with a mild steampunk twist, that’s appropriate for all ages, this story will work for you.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a speaking engagement starring Rosalinda “Rosy” Eberhardt, the world’s only Dragon Whisperer. During the Q&A, she’s asked to recount the story of the Onus, a particularly famous adventure from her youth. We flashback to Rosy’s younger years as she takes her place among the crew of The Carina and their ongoing mission to seek out and resolve conflicts between humans and magical beasts.
Rosy finds favor and respect among the crew after her adventures in Volume 1, and she soon learns to run parts of the ship, takes sword-fighting lessons from her friend, Kip, and learns to stick up for herself against the grumpier members of the crew. One evening, the crew hears a strange singing coming from Garn’s cabin. Garn is a strange creature that looks like a cross between a woman and a praying mantis.
Garn’s song is the result of a trance, and Rosy is able to use her dragon whispering powers to interpret a vision from the melody. We conclude the issue with a vision of entrapment, a surprise, and a new direction.
