Was It Good?
DOCTOR WILDER #3 is the kind of cyberpunk-lite, action/thriller your mama never told you about… but should have. The setting and basic premise are unique. The characters are well-written and developed. And all the necessary piece parts are present – emotion, stakes, consequences, action, and great art.
It’s almost a rarity to find a comic that does so much right by starting with a solid foundation and building from there. Childs and Hawking pick up from the last issue with Doctor Wilder and her team throwing (some) caution to the wind by going on the offensive against the head of the poaching ring. When one of the team is caught by surprise, things go terribly wrong.
You can believe how and why one team gets into a bad spot. You understand the complex stew of emotions every team member goes through when one of their own is in danger. The dialog perfectly encapsulates every character’s action and reaction in concert with the action to deliver a gripping, tight story.
Giampà’s art is phenomenal in this issue. Along with Rossi and Temofonte, the linework is super clean and detailed, the coloring (especially the lighting highlights) is near perfect, and Temofonte’s lettering is on-point.

If you don’t recall WHY Doc Wilder went on the offensive, first read our DOCTOR WILDER #2 review.
We begin with Macy charging into the headquarters of Scott’s partner, determined to capture one of the poaching ring’s main bosses. She makes a grand entrance and snags her prey.
Meanwhile, Deja (Doctor Wilder) discusses intel about a lab holding a rare elephant for genetic farming. The team makes plans to infiltrate the lab, rescue the elephant, and destroy all genetic samples to prevent more experimentation.
Elsewhere, Vergel infiltrates an office building to gather more data about the additional members running the poaching operation. Before he gets far, Vergel is surrounded and knocked out to be held as leverage. We conclude the issue with desperation, screaming, and heartbreak.
