Was It Good?
DOCTOR WILDER #2 is an engaging comic because it takes little moments and chooses unexpected directions from what you might expect. There aren’t big surprises in this issue, but there are enough little ones to keep you entertained.
When last we left Dr. Wilder, she was captured by a band of cutthroat mercenaries in a shipping warehouse. In issue #2, readers are treated to a suspenseful rescue, a well-written and acted procedural where the gang starts to dig for intel on the poaching gang’s partners, and a crackerjack confrontation scene in a restaurant that you won’t see coming.
On its own, the concept of a cyber-anti-poaching agency is already creatively unique. When you add in characters that have above-average assertiveness and aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, the story takes on a refreshing anti-hero edge.
Beyond the little writing surprises, the art team’s execution in this issue is phenomenal. The lines are super-crisp, the character acting is realistic without looking over-referenced, and the colors are striking. There are bits of action in this issue, but in truth, this is a dialog-heavy issue. Still, the art team does a fantastic job picking the most dramatic character poses and panel angles to keep the reader interested.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
It’s been a long while since we reviewed the first issue, so get caught up by reading our DOCTOR WILDER #1 review.
We begin with Dr. Wilder beaten and held at gunpoint in the storage warehouse where Scott Walters sent her on a wild goose chase. Fortunately, Wilder’s friends drop in with blazing guns to free her and rid the world of a few mercenaries.
Later the Wilder bunch reconvene at headquarters to discuss their next steps. Wilder decides to pay Scott a personal visit while the bunch searches for intel about his potential partners. Wilder shows up at a restaurant where Scott is on a dinner date, and she lets Scott know he’s going down, courtesy of a broken nose for his date.
We conclude the issue with hasty phone calls, an impromptu trip to NYC, and an (un)welcoming committee.
