Is THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #3 Good?

David Pepose amps up the swashbuckling adventure in this tale of demon possession and murder in THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #3. What started out as a gruesome version of Freaky Friday with demons now takes on tones of the Mount of Monte Christo for an eclectic entry in the series.

When last we left Father Vieri, his grit to prove he’s trapped inside Santiago’s body won the day when Maria became convinced of his situation. Meanwhile, Legion wasted no time committing acts of treachery and murder in Rome. Now, Father Vieri assumes the disguise of a wealthy and debauched Marques to spring a trap for Legion, but will Cardinal Mancini’s jealous suspicions get in the way?

With all the body-swapping and assortment of personalities, Pepose earns bonus points for keeping the “voices” obvious so that you know which consciousness is occupying which body. Further, this is the most action-heavy issue of the series to date, so Pepose is giving you a mashup of horror and adventure in one comic.

What’s great about THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #3? Pepose cranks up the thrills and energy in this issue when Father Vieri and Maria set their trap. Pepose’s brisk pace keeps the issue moving and tension high by setting a figurative ticking clock when Cardinal Mancini unwittingly moves to interfere.

What’s not so great about THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #3? There’s nothing glaringly wrong in this issue. Father Vieri’s trap is clever, and the action is intense. The one nitpick is the lack of explanation as to how Father Vieri acquired so many resources and wealth to construct his façade as a Marques so quickly.

How’s the art? Excellent. Alex Cormack’s semi-realistic art style looks like a film translated to the pages, but the angles and character movement retain the dynamic energy of live motion. Cormack’s colors pop and the facial acting is fantastic.

What’s THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #3 About?

Check out our THE DEVIL THAT WEARS MY FACE #2 review to find out how Maria was convinced of Father Vieri’s identity.

We begin with Legion (in Father Vieri’s body) presiding over the execution of a Freemason. Legion convinced everyone that the Pope’s death was the result of a Freemason plot, which fees Legion from any suspicion and space to commit more mayhem.

Elsewhere, Father Vieri and Maria sail to Rome under the guise of wealthy Marques and Marquesa de Lorenzo. They plan to lure Legion to a Carnevale part hosted at the Marques’s newly constructed estate so they can trap and expel the demon. When Legion accepts the formal invitation to attend, he’s pleased to see many carnal delights waiting for him.

We conclude the issue with an intentional accident, an interruption, and a lethal misunderstanding.
