The art is as shock-filled as any zombie film you’ve come to love if you’re a horror fan. The characters were drawn with expressive faces that capture the shock and fear that comes through in their panicked state.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Lawrence, his daughter Kendra, and Daisy barrel out of their garage in a pickup truck, smashing through the man-eating children without hesitation (Check out our Damned, Cursed Children #4 review to find out what got them into this mess).
Before long, they encounter a road block of debris, tables, chairs and all sorts of junk intentionally piled in the middle of the road. As Kendra puts it, the children are getting smarter.
This revelation raises the threat level because the children aren’t simply mindless animals. They’ve either retained some human intelligence or they’re getting smarter. Smart enough to set traps.
The trio get out to clear the debris, and within minutes, they’re truck is taken over, including their weapons, and they’re surrounded. Lawrence uses the guns on him to fight back and clear the way back to the truck. Unfortunately, Daisy is overwhelmed by children and doesn’t make it.
Again, the threat level is raised. No one is “safe” in this situation, and you genuinely feel anything can happen, which makes this a more enjoyable read.
Lawrence and Kendra drive out to the highway to find a way out, but the smarter children managed to get a big rig going. What follows is a deadly highway chase between pickup truck and semi that ends explosively.
The pickup truck is knocked out of commission, and the two survivors are forced to find a safe place on foot.
The last third of the issue concludes the issue (and the arc) with Lawrence taking refuge in a gated cemetery. Of course, things go badly for everyone involved.
How Does It End?
Some types of gatecrashing are good, others are bad. There is no greater love than to give your life for another. There may be hope for humanity… maybe.
Final Thoughts
DAMNED, CURSED CHILDREN #5, available from Source Point Press on May 26th, 2021, takes the best of zombie outbreak/plague stories and creates a taut thriller filled with scares, drama, and gore. This is an excellent series for any horror fan.
