Prospero guides Conan through secret passages to flank the attackers and provide a much needed opening. The violence is visceral and immediate, highlighting the cost of Numedides’s sudden betrayal of his former war hero.

Deep within the palace, King Numedides retreats further into his own delusions while clutching the mysterious “Woeful Eye” artifact. His advisors watch in silent terror as the monarch speaks to shadows and demands blood for his perceived slights. The supernatural influence of the eye begins to manifest as a physical darkness that creeps through the halls of power. It becomes clear that this is no longer just a political conflict, but a spiritual infection.

Conan eventually leads a united rebel army against the palace, slaughtering the remnants of the Black Guard who remain loyal to King Numedides. He acknowledges that while the city is free, the entire kingdom has become a cage under the mad king’s rule. The issue concludes with the barbarian confronting King Numedides, who’s struck a deal with dark forces, resulting in a test of inhuman strength and the crowning of a new king.

Jim Zub captures Conan’s voice perfectly by keeping his dialogue sparse, rugged, and focused on immediate action. The transition from the political maneuvering of the previous issue to this full-blown escape is handled with impressive skill.
