Is It Good?
Yes, THE BOOGYMAN #4 is excellent. This series continues to be one of the surprise hits in 2022 and one of our top picks of the year for a good reason. This issue is filled with supernatural battles, strong emotional moments, nuanced character development, and edge-of-your-seat tension. There’s nothing like this story on the market, and the execution is simply stellar.
Mathieu Slavia’s script centers on Father Death, Elliot, and Nightmare scrambling to evade capture by the Boogymen. Their efforts come at a deadly cost, and between the pulse-pounding fight scenes against a neverending series of attackers, we get a thorough flashback to Father Death’s history and how he came to be the protector he is today. The seamless blend of supernatural horror action and super-strong character work is one of the main reasons why this series has yet to disappoint.
This issue has no down point, but there is a small seed of concern. The series doesn’t appear to have a goal in mind other than “survive.” That goal works well enough as long as the chase is entertaining, as it is here, but a chase can’t go on forever. We’ll keep a close eye on this series to see what happens when the chase turns into something else. For now, buckle up and enjoy the ride.
Djet’s art is phenomenal. Every panel feels like it’s in a perpetual state of motion. An attacking murder of crows swoop and dive from all directions. Fists fly, nightmares leap, and victims sprint in any direction that provides a glimpse of refuge. The aforementioned chase plot works so well because Djet’s energetic art style keeps you moving with nary a panel to rest.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
Check out our THE BOOGYMAN #3 review to find out Father Death found himself cornered by flying nightmares.
We begin with Elliot racing down an alley on Nightmare’s back when he runs into one of the Boogymen hunting them. She questions Elliot about Father Death’s location, not realizing Father Death led a murder of crows away from Elliot a few block over. Nightmare attacks the Boogyman while Father Death unleashes a brutal attack on the crows to break free.
Soon, the Boogyman who blocked Elliot knocks Nightmare away and mocks Elliot for protecting Father Death, explaining that Father Death is far more dangerous than she. Father Death catches up to Elliot and puts the Boogyman down, buying the reunited trio a few seconds to escape.
More Boogymen arrive, and Father Death signals Nightmare to attack the newcomers to buy Elliot more time to get away. Later, Elliot confronts Father Death about his past, and we learn how the oldest Boogyman came to be. We conclude the issue with eons of history, a change of heart, and a call for help.
