Is It Good?
THE BOOGYMAN #3 is an outstanding entry in an already stellar series from Ablaze. Up to now, Mathieu Salvia and Djet created a tale about a supernatural civil war with a young boy at the heart of the latest conflict. Now, the hunt continues in earnest, but we get a ton of interesting backstory to explain the rules of the Boogyan and how the civil war started.
We don’t use the word “stellar” casually. This is a phenomenal horror comic series, and this particular issue excels in two key areas.
First, Salvia’s world-building is phenomenal because the characters explain how the Boogyman came to be, how they’ve co-existed with humans for years, and how the civil war poses a threat to everyone. That may sound like a lot of information, but Salvia integrates the telling and the showing of the information so organically, you barely notice the info dump because you’re too busy enjoying the reading experience.
Second but not least, Djet’s gritty, moody, stylized art is exquisite. The character designs are whimsical, the action scenes are power-packed, and the emotional moments are poignant. Generally, we tend to have a negative view of rough, sketchy art, but it works here because Djet infuses so much personality into the panels for a thoroughly engaging set of visuals. Djet’s sketchy approach emphasizes the fairytale whimsy of the story, so it fits.

Check out our THE BOOGYMAN #2 review to find out how Elito and Father Death became cornered under a bridge.
We begin with Father Death in a desperate fight against two younger Boogymen sent by Grandma. Father Death is quickly outmatched, but before the hunters can claim his life, the elder Boogyman, who lives under the bridge, arrives with a small army of nightmares to tear the hunters apart for violating his territory.
After, Father Death and the Elder speak about their current situation, and Eliot learns much about the origins of the Boogymen. More hunters are presumed to be on their way, so the Elder will provide cover while Father Death and Eliot escape.
Later, Father Death and Eliot make it to the city. We conclude the issue with a tearful exchange, a quiet meal, and a noisy exit.

THE BOOGYMAN #3 is a banger of an issue with an escalating hunt for Eliot and Father Death serving as the backdrop for masterfully executed world-building that unveils the history of the Boogymen. The story flows like a dream (or nightmare), and the art is powerful.
