Is It Good?
BIG BANG ADVENTURES #22 brings the adventures of the Whiz Kids to a rip-rousing close as Galahad leads a charge against the Old Man at the Mountain and his magical Ifrit to stop the malevolent magicians from claiming a powerful artifact. Mixing myth, legend, literature, and modern heroics, Pedro Angosto’s script packs every square inch of this comic with characters and stories.
When last we left the Whiz Kids, they discovered the Old Man at the Mountain’s plan to infiltrate the magical island of Sarras, with the help of Knight-Sprite. Now, it’s an all-out war to stop the wizarding leader of the Assassins where allies will fall, new allies will arise, and old allies will return from a long absence.
What’s great about this comic? If you like big superhero battles, BIG BANG ADVENTURES #22 can’t get any bigger. Angosto’s script hits the ground running with the pacing equivalent of a runaway freight train. The art team delivers epically-scaled, energetic fight choreography, and the story delivers more than one wow moment to grab your attention. This issue is all about the spectacle.
What’s not so great about this comic? It’s dense. It’s not just your average variety of dense. It’s denser than a collapsed star in a gravity well. There are so many names, dates, places, references, literary quotes, callbacks to historical legends, and on and on and on, your mind will reel at trying to keep it all straight. Imagine trying to pack a year’s worth of Telenovela twists and turns into a single episode. In short, it’s too busy, so you can’t focus on what matters without a significant effort.
How’s the art? Jorge Santamaría and Juan Moreno’s line work is solid, and the panel compositions/layouts are excellent. You get epic action that feels large in scope and scale, so that’s a positive. Conversely, the costumes and coloring are just as busy as the script, so it’s like trying to get absorbed in a heavy, emotional battle made out of rainbow confetti. Colorful costumes are a mainstay of superhero comics, but sometimes less is more.

Final Thoughts

BIG BANG ADVENTURES #22 brings the last Whiz Kids adventure to a close with a massive battle to stop an evil wizard from obtaining the Holy Grail. The energy and heroics pack every square inch of this comic, and the art is very good, but the material is super dense, and the coloring might put a strain on your eyes.
