Is It Good?
BIG BANG ADVENTURES #17 is part two of The Last Whiz Kids Story where Galahad and his team stage an all-out assault against Hassan-Ib-Sabbah, aka the Old Man, while possession of the Holy Grail hangs in the balance. Angosto’s story is filled with more twists and turns than Rubiks Cube with the color stickers pulled off, so you definitely get more than your money’s worth in the sheer volume of the story alone. However, too much of anything isn’t always the best.
Angosto’s plot centers on the big battle introduced in the first part of the story (see Big Bang Adventures #14). We learn how the Old Man finds the location of the Holy Grail, we see how the heroes learn of the Old Man’s plan and who’s helping him, and Galahad learns a disturbing truth about his past, hidden by magic. The action is fierce, there are enough superheroes and villains to warrant a dozen spin-off titles, and the ending somehow promises an even bigger battle to come in a future issue.
That said, sometimes less is more. There’s so much going on in this comic that it’s difficult to track all the characters, revelations, and outcomes. Individually, the characters and plot threads are exciting fun, but Angosto tries to cram too much in all at once without enough setup or time to let the character moments breathe. Thankfully, the character designs by Santamaría and Moreno are distinctive enough to tell the army of characters apart.
Speaking of character designs, there’s more imagination and creativity going on in this issue than in the last two years of Marvel and DC Comics combined. It’s as if Santamaría and Moreno put a character generator on ultra-random and shook it one hundred times before committing the designs to paper. This issue, by far, has the most diverse array of character costumes, powers, and names of any comic we’ve encountered, so if you’re into creativity and imagination, this is it.

BIG BANG ADVENTURES #17 is a fast-paced, high-energy, super-creative midpoint in The Last Whiz Kids Story event. The action is relentless, the character designs (names, costumes, powers) are highly imaginative, and the plot raises the stakes with each page turn. However, there’s so much going on that keeping track of it all will make your head spin, so be prepared to take notes.
