Is It Good?
Now we’re cooking with Ultranium! BIG BANG ADVENTURES #15 is as close as you can get to a Silver Age comic in the modern era without being there. Big Bang Comics has another winner on their hands for readers that want nothing more than to forget about their troubles with some good old-fashioned superhero action.
The highlight of this issue is nearly everything. Carlson picks up from the previous issue with a return story surrounding Chris Kelly re-assuming the mantle of Ultiman after Dexter Cortex’s consciousness finds a way to hack every replacement android Kelly ever built and sends them on a destruction spree. That’s quire a mouthful, but the pacing, plotting, slightly-corny-but-in-an-endearing-way dialog, and action are all perfect.
Williams’s art channels everything you love about John Byrne’s visual style of storytelling. The character designs are super athletic (pun intended), the colors are vivid, and the action fills you with nostalgic feelings for a time when comics were all about fun.
The minor down point in this issue is the super serialized (again, pun intended) nature of the story. Rather than having a clear beginning, middle, and end with references to what came before, you pick up in the middle of a scene without the benefit of a preface or recap. In other words, you’ll be completely lost if you haven’t read the previous issues, so this issue ignores the “every issue is somebody’s first issue” axiom.
