Is It Good?
BEASTO BLANCO: SPACEWAVE CONQUEST (ONE-SHOT) is a gimmick comic. It’s a gimmick because the heroes are styled after the metal band Beasto Blanco, but there’s a key difference between this comic and other gimmicks of the same sort – this comic is fun.
Gunn and Wallis are the Source Point Press creative team to beat, as they seem to find a way to take standard tropes, twist them, and add an always-cool, sometimes-funny edge to them. Here, a space dictator commandeers a communication station to send a will-destroying signal across the galaxy to set himself up as ruler over all. With minutes to spare, Beasto Blanco arrives with guns a-blazin’ and chords a-rockin’ to save the day.
The magic of this issue isn’t the deep, complex, nuanced storytelling. The magic is in the slick, stylized execution through both writing and art. Wisely, Gunn uses the power of the band’s music to help in their predictable victory, but the setup makes sense and doesn’t veer into gut-clenching corniness.
Again, this is a gimmick comic, but it’s a smart, fun gimmick comic, and that’s all anyone can ask for.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with a communication relay platform in space. Commander Dix and his henchman have taken over the platform and inserted a virus that will broadcast a signal that will eliminate the free will of all who hear it across the galaxy. While the commander waits for the virus to complete its infiltration, a proximity alert warns the commander that Beasto Blanco is approaching to stop him.
Locked and loaded, the band makes a hasty landing and blasts their way through aliens and robots to get to the control center. The band has to contend with forces from all directions, so they split up to give readers a taste of each band member’s unique talents for hacking, slashing, shooting, and fighting.
Eventually, Beasto Blanco converges on the control center and begins working to counteract the virus. However, they arrive too late to stop it. We conclude the issue with a gambit to stall for time, a montage of what’s at stake, and if you can’t beat ’em, rock ’em.

What qualifies as science fantasy?
Science fantasy is a form of fiction that blends the elements of science fiction and fantasy into a single narrative. Science fiction alone builds a fictional story around one or more scientific principles (e.g. what if time travel was possible?). Fantasy takes one or more fantastical elements that are outside the realm of science (eg. magic or supernatural) as central to its premise. Science Fantasy allows for elements of both.
