Was It Good?

BARBARELLA (VOL. 2) #7 is clean, simple, and kicks off a fun little escape tale for the titular character.

One of the qualities Hoyt nailed early on is Barbarella’s indomitable will and her talent to adapt to nearly any situation through her innate kindness and loving spirit. It’s hard not to like somebody who always chooses to see the best in people and acts accordingly, especially when that kindness is paid back in surprising ways.

In this issue, Barbarella has her wit and kindness put to the test in unusual ways, reminding readers why she is so likable. The issue is practically overstuffed with feel-good moments from “prison” escapes, to helping wounded animals, to chance meetings with kindly, elderly scholars, to multiple MacGuyver references. You get it all, and each scene furthers the story and gives you yet another reason to admire this character.

After a brief break, Musabekov returns to art duty and the results are stunning. The attention to detail is gorgeous, and a lot of the credit goes to Nunes’s coloring. With very few exceptions, this entire series is the best-looking comic Dynamite has ever produced.

What’s It About?

If you don’t recall how Barbarella escaped her last adventure, first read our BARBARELLA (VOL. 2) #6 review.

We begin with Barbarella, Vix, and TALN hot on the trail of the Lady when they’re accidentally sucked into a gravity well. When Barbarella and Vix wake up, they’re in an alien zoo cage and TALN is missing. Using her wits and cleverly concealed tool in her boot, Barbarella and Vix escape the zoo and head for the surrounding jungle with a quest to find a spaceship.

In the jungle, Barbarella chances upon a wounded dinosaur. When she pulls the proverbial thorn from its paw, the dino offers to give her a ride to her destination. Along the way, she encounters a local who recognizes her as the object of the Lady’s obsession and offers to help her escape in the hopes that Barberella’s victory will release the Lady’s tyrannical oppression of the planet.

We conclude the issue with a meeting with a fellow castaway, the return of TALN… almost, and some very fine MacGuyver-ing.

Final Thoughts

BARBARELLA (VOL. 2) #7 is a simpler but still excellent entry in the series with astoundingly gorgeous art, progress on the plot that reveals more about the Lady’s origins, and dinosaurs! This issue is one of the better issues in the series and worth the cover price.
