Is ATOM: THE BEGINNING (VOL. 6) Good?
As the saying goes, “It’s on like Donkey Kong!” when U-Ran is enrolled in the first-ever WRB tournament to prove which International robotics team has the best robot around. Osamu Tezuka and Masami Yuuki’s action-filled battle royale delivers all the robotics battles you can handle and more, especially when things get out of hand.
Tezuka and Yuuki’s latest volume centers on U-Ran’s first public appearance to the world as the greatest representation of robotics genius Tenma and Hiroshi have ever created. When the competition begins, U-Ran conquers the first round easily, but as the competition gets tougher, the pressure tests U-Ran beyond her limits, resulting in a chain reaction of chaos and destruction. Plus, Tenma and Hiroshi learn a shocking secret about Dr. Lolo.
To be clear, the vast majority of this volume focuses on the tournament, U-Ran’s performance in it, her part in turning the tournament into an outbreak of chaos, and the aftermath, but the Dr. Lolo secret reveal is a doozy. Tenma’s feelings for Dr. Lolo take on a whole new meaning once the secret is discovered.
What’s great about ATOM: THE BEGINNING (VOL. 6)? If you crave robot-fighting action, this volume is overflowing with all you can handle. Round after round of combat action hit you left, right, and center, and once again, U-Ran demonstrates why she’s (almost) the greatest robot around.
What’s not so great about ATOM: THE BEGINNING (VOL. 6)? Tenma’s actions in this volume are slightly confusing. He was/is/should be hyper-competitive about U-Ran’s success, but he’s frequently distracted by Dr. Lolo, seemingly losing interest in the tournament. Sure, Tenma can be impetuous, but in this volume, his characterization takes that impetuousness to an odd extreme.
How’s the art? Tetsuro Kasahara’s art is fantastic. Robots dash, fly, smash, and pummel each other ruthlessly, and you get a front-row seat to all the action.

Check out our ATOM: THE BEGINNING (VOL. 5) review to see how Six and U-Ran got past their differences to form a sibling bond.
We begin with an explanation of the tournament rules for the 100 robot contestants in the first International WRB Tournament. There are ten rounds, and the robot who races to the target takes one of ten batons, and returns to start, earning a point. Attacking other robots is, of course, permitted.
When the race begins, U-Ran is first to the target and back, making her an early favorite. However, when the second round starts and the fighting heats up with the tougher robots, U-Ran finds her fear emotions taking over. Six is prevented from helping U-Ran, so in an act of desperation, U-Ran reboots to transform her fear into rage. Unfortunately, that rage is transmitted to all the robots around her.
We conclude the issue with a disaster, reinforcements, and braces.
