Is It Good?
THE ARMY OF DARKNESS VS REANIMATOR: NECRONOMICON RISING #4 is another entry in the series, mixing gonzo, violent action, a respectable amount of plot movement, and a tinge of Ash’s trademark snarky humor. Combine those points with excellent art and an out-of-nowhere gotcha on the last page, and you have the makings of a winning comic.
Burnham’s plot focuses on Ash, Dr. West, and Wyrdie on the run in a burnt-out future, looking for supplies, a plan, and a way back to their time. Burnham takes the opportunity to weave in the typical discussion of time paradoxes and alternate timelines as the trio figures out the best course of action. Whether or not the trio is right remains to be seen, but Burnham smartly spells out the risks of time travel to inform the trio’s next steps and set up their motivations.
You could make the case that nothing major happens in this issue (except for the last page), but the exposition and brainstorming are interlaced with enough deadite action and scheming to keep the reading experience engaging. In short, this is a setup issue that feels meatier than a simple setup issue.
Cassallos’s art is exquisite in this issue. If you were prone to pickiness, you could say Cassallos’s art is almost too clean for the setting and the type of horror in this issue. To be clear, the linework is clean, the action is impactful, and Sutil’s colors are top-notch. Conversely, the gore and violence feel too sterile.

Check out our THE ARMY OF DARKNESS VS REANIMATOR: NECRONOMICON RISING #3 review to find out what happened when our unlikely trio arrived in the future.
We begin with Dr. West, Ash, and Wyrdie racing through the abandoned streets of the city after escaping Future West’s citadel. In need of supplies, they head for the only place well-stocked enough to handle any contingency – S-Mart.
Ash gathers ammo while Dr. West looks for enough household chemicals to make explosives. Secretly, Dr. West also wants to find enough chemicals to create more of his reagent. After the group considers the implications of time travel, and what would happen if Dr. West were killed or didn’t make it back to his time, the trio splits up to look for more materials.
Suddenly, Lil’ Evil Ash crashes the party. We conclude the issue with tissue samples, live experiments, and an ending that will blow your mind.

THE ARMY OF DARKNESS VS REANIMATOR: NECRONOMICON RISING #4 is a witty, creative, and exposition-heavy issue with enough action and plot development to elevate the story above a standard setup issue. The art is pristine, albeit a little too clean for a gore comic, and the ending hits with a shocking surprise.
