Is ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3 Good?

ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3 isn’t great. It sits just shy of good, which may be good enough for diehard Army of Darkness fans. For everyone else, this issue probably isn’t going to turn you into a fan.

When last we left Present Ash and Future Ash, Present Ash was somehow possessed by Evil Ash with a strong enough grip on Present Ash’s mind to convince him to secretly kill anyone in S-Mart (employee or patron) who ticked him off. Future Ash encountered post-apocalyptic robots and an AI hologram of the Wiseman from the Dark Ages who waited for Ash to wake up from his deep sleep.

Did you get all that? Good.

Now, Holo-Wiseman sends Future Ash on a quest to retrieve the scattered pages of the Necronomicon as the only means to send Future Ash back to his Time. Meanwhile, Future/Evil Ash barely maintains enough control to stop himself from killing everyone while he waits for their “master” to make his next move. In the past, Lady Sheila gathered allies to defeat a gang of Deadites in the forest.

Did you get all that? Good.

What’s great about ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3? The plot in the individual timelines is starting to come into focus. Tony Fleecs gives Ash plenty of personality for entertaining character interactions, and a certain warrior shows up for a cool Easter Egg to establish even more connections to the film.

What’s not so great about ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3? Time travel stories are not to be undertaken without extreme caution for just this very reason. Fleeces is working a story through multiple timelines, but you don’t know which one to pay attention to, and it’s not clear how Ash can be in two timelines at the same time for the same story when his trip through Time involves a deep sleep. “Ash is over here AND over there because… reasons” is not good enough, which is why this series, so far, is confusing.

How’s the art? The art is solid. Justin Greenwood’s caricature-ish style suits the tone of the story, and that character cameo mentioned above is close enough to the real actor that you get the resemblance, which is a positive.

What’s ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3 About?

Check out our ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #2 review to find out when Present Ash got a little too annoyed.

We pick up with Lady Sheila running for her life from flying Deadites. She spots a group of soldiers who lend her their aid. When the Deadites are dead, Lady Sheila learns one of her saviors is an old enemy.

Elsewhen, Future Ash demands to know from the Holo-Wiseman why he isn’t in his own Time. Holo-Wiseman explains the only way for Future Ash to get back to where he belongs is with the magic of the Necronomicon, which has since been torn apart during the fall of humanity. Future Ash’s only option is to reassemble the dispersed pages.

Now, Present Ash struggles to get through another tedious day at S-Mart when the voice of Evil Ash tells him to not kill anyone else. We conclude the issue with quaint technology, bloody daydreams, and the future of Deadites.

Final Thoughts

(Click this link 👇 to order this comic)

ARMY OF DARKNESS FOREVER #3 brings the disparate timelines into slightly more focus when each of Ash’s quests is made known. Individual moments are okay, even entertaining, but the Time Travel aspects are handled poorly for an occasionally interesting but largely confusing issue.

Score: 6/10
