Is ANTARCTICA #7 Good?
Simon Birks upends the mysterious experiments happening at the Antarctic research station when a young Hannah Curtis is shown the truth in ANTARCTICA #7. Regardless of what happens next, Hannah will never be the same.
When last we left Jerome Curtis, he expertly maintained a quiet home life for his young daughter, Hannah, during the Christmas season. Secretly, Jerome guided the experiment outside the façade of their reproduced home to achieve an undisclosed outcome. Now, Dr. Gohel is overcome with guilt over taking Hannahs from the multiverse for this experiment, and she secretly contacts Hannah to help her escape a prison she doesn’t know she’s in.
Unless we missed something, the Hannah presented in this arc is not the same Hannah from the first volume of this series. If true, that means Jerome Curtis and his colleagues can traverse alternate Earths with different timelines than their own.
What’s great about ANTARCTICA #7? On several levels, Simon Birks’s second volume is cleaner, more linear, and easier to follow than the first volume. It helps to not have so many developments happen between issues or off-panel, so readers can focus on the story as it unfolds on the page. Plus, the mystery behind Jerome Curtis’s experiment is intriguing.
What’s not so great about ANTARCTICA #7? Our regular readers know that mysteries only work when you drop clues frequently enough for the reader to play along in solving the puzzle. Birks doesn’t drop any clues in this issue, and the mystery of the experiment gets increasingly complicated, which makes the mystery increasingly frustrating. After seven issues, we still have no idea where Jerome Curtis is, what he’s doing, or why.
How’s the art? Willi Roberts is delivering the best artwork of his career in this volume. The line work, coloring, and panel compositions are practically cinematic, so you feel like you’re part of a complex sci-fi movie.

Check out our ANTARCTICA #6 review to find out where the second young Hannah came from.
We begin with Jerome Curtis re-enacting the Christmas vacation scenario in the facsimile of his home with the latest 7-year-old Hannah Curtis. All is going as expected, but when Hannah enters the living room alone, their picture window suddenly changes into a video screen showing Dr. Gohel. The video contains a message prompting Hannah to go to her room.
Upstairs, Hannah’s window turns into a video screen, and Dr. Gohel explains she’s going to help Hannah escape her home using items hidden in her room. Hannah is surprised but decides to follow Dr. Gohel’s instructions.
We conclude the issue with unstable walkways, blocked descents, and a leap of faith.

Final Thoughts

ANTARCTICA #7 deepens the mystery of Jerome Curtis’s experiment and throws a monkey wrench in the works. Birks creates an atmosphere and intrigue around Jerome Curtis’s work, but there are too many missing details and too few clues to make sense of what’s happening.
