Is 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #6 Good?
Phillip Kennedy Johnson brings his stellar turn on James Bond to a close with tense action, clever gambits, and an ending that creates an uneasy stalemate in 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #6. If you’re going to end a mini-series with a slightly ambiguous open ending, this issue shows you how to do it the right way.
Johnson’s gripping finale pits Bond against Gann now that the former MI-6 agent’s subversive plan to overthrow Fromm and claim Myrmidon for herself is in full view. Outmatched and outgunned, Bond is soon captured, but a clever bit of advance planning by Felix Leiter will save Bond’s life. However, will Bond’s rescue be enough to save the world from Myrmidon’s nanotech virus?
The answer to the above question is “yes and no.” Again, Johnson crafts a relatively satisfying conclusion to Bond’s latest adventure, but much like other stories with threats too big to put back in the box, the victory feels more like a temporary reprieve.
What’s great about 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #6? Johnson’s finale exemplifies everything you love about James Bond endings (particularly from the source material and the Daniel Craig-era films). There’s not a scrap of fanciful spy magic to be found because you get a gripping thriller punctuated by believable cleverness in Bond’s actions. As fantastical as Bond’s adventures tend to be, Johnson chooses a route that feels authentically gritty.
What’s not so great about 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #6? Johnson achieves what so few comic writers in the modern era can, crafting a satisfying conclusion with an open ending. That said, the disposition of one character seen on the last panel is too open-ended because the panel suggests a fate without committing to what happens next. If you’re a Sopranos fan, consider what happens in the last shot of the final episode, and you get the idea. If you don’t know, look it up on YouTube to get the picture.
How’s the art? Alessio Avallone’s art ranges from okay to very good. Avallone’s close-up panels look great, and the action scenes are well done, but in the wide shots, Avallone loses a lot of detail, rendering characters with amorphous blobs for faces.

Check out our 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5 review to find out how Bond discovered Gann’s plan.
We begin with Bond and Gann in an evenly-matched fight until Gann’s soldiers arrive for reinforcements. Bond escapes into Fromm’s office and barricades the door to conceive a plan with Linus and Felix on comms. Gann and her forces eventually break through and take Bond into custody.
Later, Gann assembles Myrmidon’s forces in the main entryway so she can deliver a speech of loyalty to her cause. Suddenly, fire alarms sound, and chaos erupts in the gathering. We conclude the issue with a backup, a different kind of virus, and a poem.

007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #6 brings the hard-hitting mini-series to a close when Bond stands alone against an army ready to take over the world. Johnson’s finale strikes a pleasing balance between action and spycraft, and Avallone’s art is energetic.
