Is 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5 Good?
Phillip Kennedy Johnson is writing his butt off in the latest James Bond adventure, and we couldn’t be happier. 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5 is jam-packed with action, twists, turns, double-crosses, and high-stakes tension for an exciting thrill ride.
When last we left James Bond, Myrmidon had all but secured cooperation from the world’s governments, and the agents closest to Bond may or may not be on his side. Now, Bond narrowly escapes turncoats embedded in the CIA and MI-6 to hatch a plan involving a covert raid on Myrmidon’s facilities, but is there anyone left Bond can trust to make the plan work?
007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5 is all about tension born of mistrust. Johnson plants the seeds of doubt in Bond’s mind that every enemy could be a friend in waiting or a turncoat waiting for the opportunity to pounce. With the exception of Linus and Felix, everyone’s in doubt, which makes Bond’s every move a gamble and keeps the paranoid tension sky-high.
What’s great about 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5? In addition to the escalating thrills from paranoia, Johnson crafts a rock-solid script with gritty fights, deadly consequences, twists, and turns. For his part, Bond survives, but he takes his licks in the process, so you’re getting an authentic Bond who gives as well as he gets and more.
What’s not so great about 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5? Honestly, nothing beyond the minor nitpick. Johnson is delivering one of the better Bond adventures in recent memory.
How’s the art? Spalletta and Avallone’s stylized, hard-hitting art excels where it counts by putting Bond in the crosshairs of formidable enemies and making him fight his way out with excellent fight choreography. Spalletta’s panel composition is visually dramatic, and Giulani’s coloring pops.

Check out our 007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #4 review to find out how Bond became entangled with Agent Clark.
We begin with Bond and Clark in bed together when 009 barges into the room, guns blazing. Clark takes a fatal shot, and Bond fights 009 to a standstill until 009 runs off with a severe neck wound. Later, Bond meets Gann in an abandoned subway tunnel to rendezvous with Felix and Linus to come up with a new plan.
Using a combination of handy gadgets and falsely planted intel, Gann and Bond plan to sneak into Myrmidon HQ, steal the server data about the neural tech, and arrest or kill Fromm. The plan doesn’t go as planned.
We conclude the issue with an unwelcome reception, a slip of the tongue, and a face-off.

007: FOR KING AND COUNTRY #5 sets Bond’s plan in motion to bring down Fromm and Myrmidon for good in the penultimate issue. Johnson expertly builds an atmosphere of tense paranoia when everyone on Bond’s team may be a traitor, and the art is slick and gritty.
