Is It Good?
007 #5 kicks Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s story pace into high gear when James Bond steps out on his assignment from Myrmidon to kill Nassar. Filled with twists, turns, and more double-crosses than a Hot Cross Bun convention, this penultimate issue pulls James Bond out of the frying pan while setting fire to the entire kitchen. How’s that for a mess of metaphors?
This issue is notable because Johnson successfully sets up what so few Bond writers before him managed to pull off – make you believe Bond has finally given up on his spy job. Bond doesn’t go deep undercover simply to foil the Myrmidon plot. The truth of his government’s complicity in enabling a plot makes him question whether or not his loyalties to King & Country are misplaced. So, when the Nassar assassination gets underway, you believe Bond will go through with it because simply following orders isn’t good enough.
As far as writing execution goes, the plot is tight as a drum, the pacing flies, Bond’s dialog is spot-on, and the ending builds hype for the next issue. All the right boxes are checked.
Marco Finnegan’s art appears more refined and detailed than the previous issues, and that’s a net positive. Facial expressions are a little flat, but Finnegan’s use of dramatic camera angles holds your attention. Also, it appears Kelly expanded the color palette in this issue, so the overall look is more vibrant.

Check out our 007 #4 review to find out where Bond’s loyalties truly lie.
We begin with James Bond on a leisurely jog through the streets of London when he tosses an empty water bottle into a nearby trash bin. The water bottle is soon picked up by an agent, presuming the bottle has a coded message related to the Nassar assassination plot.
Later, James heads into the MI6 office to tender his resignation. M refuses to accept it, but Bond leaves with his resignation tendered and free to carry out Myrmidon’s plan to kill Nassar.
That evening, Nassar’s security detail approaches him to leave his hotel ahead of schedule for a planned meeting. During the commute, Nassar’s transport is attacked. We conclude the issue with death and consequences.
