Is It Good?
007 #4 is an odd entry in the series. Some pieces of this issue work, while others don’t. Overall, it’s a satisfying reading for Bond enthusiasts, but not the best Bond comic.
Phillip Kennedy Johnson’s script centers around Bond’s first steps towards infiltrating British Intelligence to gather the details for a hit on Mahmoud Nassar on behalf of Myrmidon. Johnson establishes an undercurrent of tension early by questioning whether or not Bond would be willing to kill British agents for his mission. Every time a surprise pops up in Bond’s stealth op, you’re immediately beset by the “will he or won’t he” question, hoping he finds a way to avoid that choice.
The down point of Johnson’s script is the easy outcome of Bond’s mission. Alarms go off, and opposing forces rush in, but Bond effectively escapes by running around a street corner. If a high-security facility had been infiltrated, you’d think that ground forces would put more effort into Bond’s capture. The overall mission is a high-stakes nailbiter, but the weak conclusion dampens the tension.
The second down point of the issue is Finnegan’s art. Finnegan’s style is blocky, flat, and lacks energy. High-paced action scenes need to project movement and momentum, and Finnegan’s lack of action lines makes what should be a kinetic panel feel static.

Check out our 007 #3 review to find out how James Bond agreed to work with Myrmidon.
We begin with an MI5 agent encountering a stranger on a rainy afternoon. The two hit it off, which leads to adult activities that evening. The stranger is James Bond in disguise, and he targeted the agent to steal her access card while she sleeps.
Later, Bond meets up with his Myrmidon handler for supplies and a ride to his next destination – a secret British server farm. Their trip is contentious as Bond is continually prodded about his new role as a traitor to his government. When they reach the secret server building, Bond heads in alone, but his mission doesn’t go smoothly.
We conclude the issue with alarms, fights, and death.

Final Thoughts

007 #4 is a serviceable entry in the series filled with non-stop tension as James Bond is forced into a situation where he might kill his colleagues. That said, Bond’s too-easy escape diffuses the tension, and the blocky, static art takes away from the frantic action.
