Is It Good?
Simple, clean, and straightforward storytelling is all it takes to tell a zombie adventure. ZOMBICIDE: DAY ONE #1 is just such a story. Is it formulaic? Sure, but the fun isn’t in the setup. It’s in the gotchas, twists, and turns the survivors have to endure to get to where they’re going.
The setup is as basic as you could imagine. One morning, reports start coming in about an infection that turns ordinary citizens into raving, flesh-eating monsters. Before the day is out, the whole city is in chaos, and this story follows a ragtag group of survivors headed for a shelter.
Again, it’s as formulaic as it gets for a zombie adventure, but the fun is in the details. The survivors use everything from surgical saws to chainsaws. The eclectic band of travelers ranges from rollerskate waitresses to badass EMTs. Mix and match the combinations any way you like, but the net result is wildly colorful zombie-fighting fun.
The story may be formulaic, but the art is anything but. Moroni, Itri, and Francescutto churn out some of the best-looking art we’ve ever seen from a Source Point story. The figure work is strong with a hint of fantasy, the coloring is bold, and the backgrounds are amazingly detailed. This is the kind of art quality you expect to find at the Big 2, and it sells the story that much more.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Ned, a local man and conspiracy nut, crazily driving through the city in the morning. News reports are coming through about a strange virus causing people to rapidly become sick, then attack anyone within reach. Authorities treat the outbreak as they would any other virus, but Ned knows better.
As the day wears on, the city quickly spirals into chaos. Ned seeks out Wanda, a waitress diner who always showed him kindness. Ned convinces Wanda to come with him to a well-stocked shelter Ned constructed for just such an occasion. Before long, Ned and Wanda are joined by Diana, an EMT who knows how to wield surgical blades, and Julio, a big man with a big bat.
We conclude the issue with nightfall, zombies closing in, and a race to safety.
