Analysis of ZENESCOPE MYTHS & MONSTERS: FALL EDITION 2025:

First Impressions:

If we’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: “Anthologies are a notoriously mixed bag.” So it’s always a pleasant surprise when we come across an anthology that meets or exceeds expectations. Zenescope has three winning characters on its hands, and this issue is a perfect opportunity to get to know them.

Plot Analysis:

Blood Countess: Crimson Silence

A private meeting takes place between Selene – an ancient vampire with mystical powers – and a member of the Vampire Council, where the councilman relays information about Dracula’s return to power. Through the meeting, we see internal narration and flashbacks about Selene’s ascendancy in ancient Rome and her leadership of the Crimson Cult. By the end, Selene makes it clear she also plans to resist Dracula, but she doesn’t need the Council’s permission (or help) to do it.

As far as character introductions go, Joe Brusha’s backstory for Selene is as rock-solid as Mt. Rushmore. This short, which is little more than a prelude to the forthcoming King Dracula title, is little more than a prelude or prologue to set the stage for what’s to come. Furthermore, Hakan Aydin’s artwork is equally solid, even if the line work could be a little crisper.

The Wonderful Thing About Tigger

Decades ago, General Christopher Robin debriefs a group of high-ranking officials and the President on the discovery of an infant Were-Tiger who killed a hunter during a jungle hunt. The child was subsequently brought back to America and raised by the military as part of a covert team of hybrid human/animal fighters. Thus, the legend of Tigger was born.

Fans of Zenesscope’s Pooh vs. Bambi series will enjoy this side-trip in learning the history behind one of the team’s deadliest members. Noah Mitchell leans a bit too much on exposition in the opening pages, but the character moments and the ending develop a strong emotional base for the character.

Terror: Resurrection

Doctor Cross reviews case files in a secret military base where the unmoving but still living (at a cellular level) of the Black Terror is kept in stasis. Cross believes he knows how to resurrect Terror with an unorthodox approach. The experiment works, but the price for success is Cross’s soul.

We were big fans of Zenescope’s take on the public domain characters Black Terror and Miss Fury in last year’s Terror & Fury miniseries. What the story lacked that kept it from achieving greatness was clarity around how the characters arrived in the modern era with fractured memories. Now, Joe Brusha fills in that missing puzzle piece and makes this anthology a worthy addendum to the prior miniseries.

Positives

Let’s be honest. This anthology is little more than a collection of backstories on characters who’ve previously appeared (or will appear) in Zenescope miniseries not connected to Grimm Fairy Tales. However, as long as you know what to expect, this issue does its job and does it well. The art is typical Zenescope quality or higher from the collective of artists, the characters are interesting, and the potential is there.

Negatives

For all the setup, both the Tigger and Terror stories build anticipation for already-released miniseries, so this anthology feels retroactive in a sense. It feels like a missed opportunity not to announce forthcoming works starring these characters when their previous outings were so well received.

ZENESCOPE MYTHS & MONSTERS: FALL EDITION 2025 fills in the blanks and builds up hype for three of the publisher’s newest characters. Each short is well-developed, in both writing and art, and the characters are interesting enough to stand on their own. That said, two of the three shorts miss the opportunity to hype future work rather than filling in blanks from prior stories.

Score: 9/10
