Was It Good?
YOUNG REBELS #1 is cute, and therefore, it works exactly as advertised. The story centers around a collection of teens who all have unique gifts and abilities. When the tech genius of the group discovers time travel and takes a test voyage to the future, he sees a bleak future that must be stopped.
The premise strikes a near-perfect chord for a comic that sits into the YA demographic (mid-teens+). The characters range from annoying to awkward but in the same way all teenagers are at their age. Therefore, the characters are, at least initially, relatable.
The central premise makes sense and is relatively easy to follow. The down point of the writing lies in the character introductions. You’re not given a proper introduction to each character, so you have to piece together who they are and what makes them “special” through snippets of dialog. You can figure out each one if you pay close attention and squint very hard, but the characters eventually come into focus. However, this issue would have been helped by clearer introductions.
The art is above average in this inaugural issue. The character faces have reduced detail to give them a simplistic look that fits with a YA book. The faces aren’t cartoonish, but they are simplified. The backgrounds, by contrast, are detailed and excellent. Plus, the coloring in this issue is phenomenal.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with an exchange between wealthy genius, Marco Martinez, and his butler in his lab in the Martinez Building. Over some playful(ish) banter, Marco reveals he believes he’s invented time travel.
Elsewhere, Joseph argues with his mother as he’s getting dropped off at High School. He protests getting kicked off the football team due to low grades. While his mother sympathizes, she’s also relieved because joseph recently acquired telekinetic powers after a freak explosion, and she fears he’s using his powers to get ahead in sports.
Then we meet, Gabbi in Rome. She’s out on a group trip with her girlfriends when a supervillain attacks a local bank to draw out Gabbi’s alter ego – Forza. Borrowing a few clothes from her friends, Gabbi/Forza leaps into action to save the day.
Next, we meet Christopher. An NYC teen who has the gift of magic, including traveling to the astral plane, summoning avatars, levitating, and casting spells. His grandmother has been training him hard to be worthy of his gifts, but his jealous sister does not approve.
We conclude the issue with a daring experiment, a ruinous site, and a call to action.

Final Thoughts
YOUNG REBELS #1 is a pleasant mix of teen superheroes wrestling with relatable troubles as they get thrown into a “save the world” adventure. The dialog and character behaviors seem like a perfect fit for the YA demographic, but the character introductions could have used more clarity. The art, overall, is above average to excellent.
