Is It Good?
WE WICKED ONES #1 is a promising start to a new type of story unlike anything you’ve probably read before. Set in modern America, L.J. Duey’s script about a powerful witch-turned-assassin has all the makings of an intriguing series starring a complicated protagonist you can’t help liking, even when you know you shouldn’t.
Duey’s script works because it introduces readers to the main character, Celia Jordan, and her world by following Celia through a typical contract. The story and all the necessary background are conveyed through the action without endless narration boxes or tedious exposition. Duey uses Celia’s negotiation with her latest client to develop a clear picture of how Celia operates, how she thinks, and what motivates her while planting little seeds for the potential conflict ahead.
Honestly, Duey’s script is tight and clever, and it sets up Celia’s world with masterful grace. There’s not a single nit to pick or obvious flaw in the entire issue in terms of writing execution.
Second to the writing is an exceptionally good art showing by Paulo Mel and Ander Zárate. The lines are clean, Celia’s design is grounded with a hint of magical whimsy, and the panel compositions are visually captivating. There’s not a single nit to pick with the art, either.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Celia Jordan paying a late-night visit to her latest target as a contract killer. Celia is well-researched, so she devises the method of death to match her target and the nature of their deeds. Tonight, Celia preps a Senator for death when the police arrive.
One week earlier, Celia meets with a different client to discuss his requested assignment. As the negotiation proceeds, we learn how Celia thinks and subtly manipulates the client to close the deal before he chickens out. Celia closes the deal to kill a superhero who protested in favor of witches like Celia before government legislation wiped them out. To Celia, money trumps loyalty.
We conclude the issue with a good fight, a magic legacy, and acknowledging the consequences.
