Is It Good?
WE ARE SCARLET TWILIGHT #4 marks the end of Benjamin W. Morse’s wildly imaginative cyberpulp adventure about a vampire cult that takes over the world and the only hero daring enough to stop them. Filled with gritty fisticuffs, impossible odds, and a hero as American as baseball and apple pie, this series ends as strongly as it started.
When last we left Captain Lancet, the Macie Militia managed to spirit the Captain downriver to rest and formulate a new plan after the all-out assault on Madame Satankia’s stronghold failed. Now, Captain Lnacet returns to the city alone with a new and risky plan that just may plunge the world into permanent oppression or save humanity for years to come.
What’s great about this comic? Morse ends the series with the best possible finale – one that’s a complete surprise. It makes total sense when the final battle plays out, but you won’t see it coming. Better still, the conflict ends with a satisfying conclusion that comes at a cost that could spell trouble for Captain Lancet in the future. No resolution should be completely cost-free, so on that count, Morse sticks the landing.
What’s not so great about this comic? Realistically, nothing. WE ARE SCARLET TWILIGHT #4 is a pitch-perfect ending to one of the most imaginative cyberpulp stories we’ve read in recent memory. At the risk of script-doctoring, there are one or two creative choices that could have been made to give the ending a few more wow moments, but the result is plenty good as it is.
How’s the art? Phenomenal. Morse’s art style stands apart as an eye-popping mix of Bronze Age depth and character definition with exquisite coloring and shadows. We recently pointed out how Morse would be an excellent fit for any publisher with sci-fi pulp properties ala John Carter, Flash Gordon, or the Rocketeer, and we stand by that assessment.

Check out our WE ARE SCARLET TWILIGHT #3 review to learn about the content of Captain Lancet’s character.
We begin with Captain Lancet coming ashore with the help of the Maxie Militia to enact his solo plan to take down Madame Satanika and the Scarlet Twilight vampire cult. The Maxies offer to come along to help, but the Captain is sure his plan will either be a rousing success or a complete failure, and there’s nothing the Maxies can do to sway the outcome either way.
Captain Lancet makes his way to the skyscraper headquarters of the Scarlet Twilight, where he’s given free entry to Madama Satanika’s throne room. Captain Lancet is ordered to kneel before Satanika, but he refuses. Satanika orders her vampire soldiers to attack the Captain in an all-out brawl. Before the battle is done, much blood will be spilled, and that appears to be the Captain’s plan.
We conclude the issue with the Impaler living up to his legend, a repeat appearance, and a warning.
