Was It Good?

Yes, and it’s a significant story improvement over the first issue.

Warbound #1 (read our review here) was a fairly solid issue, but the down point was a heavy focus on exposition and dialog which dragged down the pacing. To be fair, the setup, character-building, and art in issue #1 were excellent, but there was more tell than show.

Issue #2 takes a marked step up in quality by evenly balancing the disposition and action for a more well-rounded story. We see how Warbound wound up in the asylum. We learn, through action, what happens when one of the rules of his immortality is put to the test. And the dialog between Warbound and the doctor questioning him reveals more about the main villain and provides a larger sense of scope for the story.

Getting a handle on the scope is important because this is a quest story. When the target of the hero’s quest gets bigger, so does the story., and it’s done here with a surprise character reveal that informs the reader Warbound has a long road ahead.

The art from Shrivastava is excellent in this issue. The linework is detailed and powerful. The colors are richly textured and give every character a sense of weight.

The only minor down point is the lettering color choices. Yellow caption boxes are typically not a problem, but using a brown-ish font color makes the letters blend a little into the background, making them a bit harder to read. high contrast between font color and background is always better for clear reading.

In all, this second issue in the series is a significant step up in the story with stellar art for good measure.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We pick up from issue #1 with Warbound continuing his interrogation after spending a few days in an asylum designed for super-powered individuals. The therapist is not quite convinced she believes the explanation behind his immortal origins, but she’s willing to hear the rest of his story.

Cut to ten days earlier where we see how Warbound came to be arrested. We see Warbound infiltrating a late-night smuggling operation containing artifacts brokered for the Sorcerer, Warbounds life-long enemy. after he kills all the guards, Warbound sees the man in charge of the operation, and it’s… the Sorcerer!

Warbound #2

Warbound flies into a rage and kills every guard on a full-out path of destruction. During the fight, Gaia and Ultimate arrive as they’ve also been tracking the illegal shipments. With their help, Warbound strikes the Sorcerer down, but not everything is as it seems.

We conclude the issue with Warbound realizing the Sorcerer has many allies to must be dealt with before his quest is over.

Final Thoughts

WARBOUND #2 is a seamless blend of dialog, narration, and action about an immortal warrior whose greatest challenges still lie ahead. The art is outstanding and the twist reveal leaves you wanting more.

Score: 9.5/10
