Was It Good?
Yes, in a “let’s see how many hearts we can rip out and heads we can rip off” kind of way. That’s not a criticism. It’s a positive.
Nyx and the Lords of Chaos have unleashed Hell on Earth to subjugate what remains of humanity. The battle won’t be won without everyone getting their hands dirty.
The art is consistently good, and Sniegoski’s story, in addition to the welcome violence, successfully builds tension for the “thing” that’s coming for everyone — regardless of which side they’re on.
What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD]
We begin with a simple scene of two lovers, Vampirella and Adam, enjoying the peace of a well-loved evening. Without warning, a dark entity approaches Vampirella to remind her there’s terrible work ahead. She must cast off weakness if she’s to be strong enough to survive.
The dark figure lashes out at Adam, killing him. But of course, it’s a nightmare. Vampirella goes down to find Adam still in his mystical cage, and the two sit together. It’s clear the two still have strong feelings for each other.
Cut to Nyx, who’s still fighting to survive the infection from her wound. Desmond and the witch are busily casting spells to heal Nyx, but with little effect. Desmond ops to focus his energies on prayer to the Chaos Lords, when suddenly, he hears a still voice calling him. Desmond leaves to follow the voice.
Meanwhile, Abaddon offers prayers of his own to the Lords of Order for a sign. The same voice that called Desmond now calls Abaddon, and he flies off to follow it. While he was praying, a pack of Legarou (horned, demonic werewolves) also hear Abaddon’s prayer and set themselves to attack him before he flies off. Hungry for blood, the Legarou decide to attack the safe house.
Switch to the human rebel base, and the group is training for combat until the time for battle arrives. Suddenly, Lord Mazarin enters the base wearing the Chaos armor.
Back to the safehouse, the Legarou break in to eat whoever’s inside. Unfortunately for them, Vampirella and Adam are there to greet them.
How did Adam get out of his cage? What becomes of the Legarou? And who’s the hooded figure that arrives at the end to make an irresistible offer? You’ll have to pick up the issue to find out.
Final Thoughts
VENGEANCE OF VAMPIRELLA #15, available from Dynamite Comics on February 24th, 2021, brings the fight to Vampirella’s doorstep with bloody, gory action and a growing sense of tension for the coming finale. The art is great, the story moves at a breezy pace, and the story successfully establishes anticipation for what comes next.
