Was It Good?

Yes, and oh, my. Despite not doing much besides writhing around in feverish delirium, Nyx is having one sexy time after another in her delusional state. Let’s just say this issue is coming at just the right time … *ahem* … for Valentine’s Day.

Cheekiness aside, the art from Sta. Maria, Baal and the whole team is great. Sniegoski’s story makes a deceptive amount of progress for an issue that’s mostly about dreaming and talking. Overall, it’s a spicy fun read.

Short Story Long

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

We begin with a feverish Nyx fighting off the effects of an infected wound. Desmond and his colleagues are unable to help her and can only offer prayer to the Lords of Chaos for Nyx’s recovery.

In Nyx’s hallucinatory mind, we see Nyx imagining a world without challenge or meaning. Her talking wound scalds her for bringing Vampirella back from the dead in an act of desperation. Nyx’s need manifests in more ways than one as she not only longs for Vampirella’s challenge but her body, too.

Meanwhile, Danse Macabre question Adam Van Helsing over the details of his return. Sniegoski cleverly interlaces snapshots of Adam’s resurrection that match Adam’s explanation to the team, but the visuals paint a very different story. It’s a nice interplay between the writer and artists by taking what a character says and creating a whole new reality from what the listeners hear.

The Danse Macabre remains skeptical, and readers now know Adam’s resurrection is part of an enemy plan of infiltration.

Back to Nyx’s dreams, the new Vampirella/Nyx power couple decided to pay a visit to the Nyx’s “parent,” a Lord of Chaos. The Lord disapproves of the relationship, and our power couple decides to return the disapproval with a brutal beatdown. although completely imagined, the dream appears to cement Nyx’s feelings for Vampirella more deeply.

We end the issue with a battlefield scene where Chaos demons are cut down in a brutal fashion. Lord Mazarin has arrived, and he has a new toy that’s going to make our hero’s life much more difficult.

Final Thoughts

VENGEANCE OF VAMPIRELLA #14, available from Dynamite Comics on February 3rd, 2021, takes the concept of “turning enemies into friends” to a whole new level. Although there’s little action, the story is engaging, the art is excellent, and there’s tons of setup for what’s to come.

Score: 8.5/10
