Was It Good?
It was…amusing. In the multiverse offerings from Dynamite this past year, every universe we visit is fraught with hard-edged danger. In this issue, Sniegoski and Acheson decide to have a little fun in that the universes shift towards whimsical and high adventure.
The contrast between the style of the universes and the threat imposed when Bloodwing shows up makes the conflict more extreme (not 90s Image extreme with too many pouches). Extreme in an unexpected way that elevates the entertainment value of the issue.
Beyond the high contrast of a multiverse-ending threat showing up in a B&W version of mid-century America, Sniegoski and Acheson pepper in more hints about the nature of Book and give some insight into Bloodwing’s grand plan. While the plan may not be terrible original, you feel stakes are greater than normal when the Chaos Lords, who’ve caused so much trouble for Vampirella, are even afraid of Bloodwing’s potential for success. It makes the situation feel more impactful, more consequential.
The art is excellent in this issue, especially when hopping between a B&W universe and a universe in full Technicolor. Cittarelli and the team capture the right vibe for the time periods depicted in each universe, which gives the distinctiveness of each location more authenticity.
What’s It About?

If you have no idea what’s going on with Book, Bloodwing, or even what the heck a multiverse is all about, first read our VAMPIVERSE #2 review.
We pick up in another universe where the Vampirella, Adam, and their children (???) are living the All-American nuclear family dream in B&W ala Leave It To Beaver. Suddenly, a technicolor rift opens up and Bloodwing arrives with her army to kill “Vampi Cleaver”. Vampi Cleaver is no stranger to tussling with the Chaos Lords but this is something different, and the classic family is almost wiped out in a few minutes. Suddenly (again), Vampirella arrives just behind Bloodwing to retrieve pages for Book and save who she can before jumping to the next universe.
Next, we catch up with Indiana Vampi thwarting a cult trying to bring the Chaos Lords back to Earth in the 1940s. With pistols a blazin’, she manages to take out most of the cult members pillaging a museum looking for a special artifact. However, Vampirella’s sudden arrival creates enough of a distraction for the cult leader to get away with the artifact.
We conclude the issue with two more Vampirellas added to the crew, Book using the retrieved pages to postulate Bloodwing’s plan, and a cult ritual ending with unexpected results.
Final Thoughts
VAMPIVERSE #3 injects a little levity into the multiverse concept to visit an Earth that only exists between commercial breaks. The stakes for the overall arc are raised exponentially, and we learn there are some things that frighten even the Chaos Lords. With excellent art and imaginative storytelling, this is turning out to be one of the most entertaining series of the year.
