Is VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #3 Good?

Holy Telenovela, Batman! VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #3 has more twists and turns than a rattlesnake slithering through a pretzel factory. In issue #2, we marveled at how Sara Frazetta and Bob Freeman captured the elusive mix of horror and soap opera storytelling, but in issue #3, that mix gets turned up even higher.

When last we left Vampirella and her supernatural friends, they learned Frances Moore was the jealous witch who cursed Randall and worked to keep Fechin’s legacy all to herself. Now, Vampirella and Hattie go on the offensive to take Frances down, but stopping Frances doesn’t mean the end of the LaFleur family’s troubles.

When we say there are a lot of twists and turns, we mean a LOT with a capital ‘L.’ To Frazetta and Freeman’s credit, they keep the plot moving smoothly without rushing too much or taking shortcuts. The plethora of plot developments unfold naturally, so you’ll get your money’s worth of story volume.

What’s great about VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #3? Frazetta and Freeman deliver a meaty story with plenty of plot development, and the plot is balanced against a fair bit of pleasing supernatural action. You get bloody fights, magic spells, and more to give you something interesting on every page.

What’s not so great about VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #3? For some readers, the sheer number of scenes and plot twists may be too much to track. So far, we have three or four dark forces pursuing their agendas, so there are a few points in the comic where it’s not quite clear which villain is responsible for which problem.

How’s the art? Alberto Locatelli’s art style mostly works. The cartoonish figure work creates a Gothic children’s story atmosphere that suits the story Frazetta and Freeman tell. However, the action panels look too cartoonish to view as seriously as the fight should be.

What’s VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #3 About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

Check out our VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #2 review to find out how Randall was cursed as a werewolf.

We begin with Frances Moore confronting Vampirella, Hattie, and the La Fleur family in the mansion’s study. Frances attacks, but Hattie casts a defense spell to counteract Frances’s magic. Vampirella throws an iron fire poker from the nearby fireplace at Frances, seriously wounding her and chasing her off.

Vampirella chases Frances through the mansion, Randall follows shortly to provide aid, and Hattie tries to recharge her connection to Hecate. With everyone headed in different directions, Frey appears to Evie and mesmerizes her into using her latent powers.

We conclude the issue with a helping hand from beyond the grave, a fatal fall, and a hurting hand from beyond the grave.

Final Thoughts

VAMPIRELLA: DEAD FLOWERS #3 continues the operatic turns with a horror twist as Vampirella faces off against Frances Moore. The pacing and plot developments are wild (in a good way), and the visuals are generally solid.

Score: 8/10
