Following up on our report a few weeks ago, we now have more details about DC Comics Absolute Power event arriving this Summer. The surprising revelation is the importance of Amazo as the central “device” used to steal power from the Justice League on behalf of Amanda Waller and the Unholy Trinity.
One-Shots and Miniseries:
- Absolute Power 2024 FCBD Special Edition (Free Comic Book Day – May 4th): This 32-page one-shot primes you for the event with an original story by Mark Waid and Mikel Janín, recaps the events leading up to “Absolute Power,” and offers a preview of the first issue.
- Absolute Power: Ground Zero (One-Shot – June 25th): This oversized one-shot bridges the events of various DC titles leading into “Absolute Power.” It reveals how Amanda Waller, with the combined might of Failsafe, the Brainiac Queen, and the Suicide Squad, unlocks the key to capturing all metahuman powers. Writers include Mark Waid, Nicole Maines, Joshua Williamson, and Chip Zdarsky.
- Absolute Power (Miniseries – 4 issues – Starts July 3rd): The core “Absolute Power” event written by Mark Waid with art by Dan Mora. The combined powers of Failsafe and the Brainiac Queen allow Amanda Waller to neutralize superheroes and villains alike. As chaos erupts and public opinion sways, a resistance led by Batman forms to fight back.
- Absolute Power: Task Force VII (Miniseries – 3 issues – Biweekly starting July 10th): This miniseries flips the perspective to the supervillains. Written by Leah Williams with art by Caitlin Yarsky, it explores how the Trinity of Evil (Brainiac Queen, Failsafe, and Amanda Waller) co-opt Amazo robots and Failsafe technology to eliminate all metahumans. Each issue focuses on a different Amazo robot targeting specific heroes:
- Issue #1 (July 10th): Introduces “The Last Son,” an Amazo robot targeting Superman and the Shazam family.
- Issue #2 (July 24th): Features “Depth Charge,” an Amazo robot that steals Aquaman’s powers and throne, forcing Mera and the Aqua-Family to rebel.
- Issue #3 (July 31st): “Jadestone” absorbs the powers of the Justice Society of America, but Green Lantern’s willpower throws a wrench in the plans. The remaining JSA members attempt a rescue.
- Absolute Power: Origins (Miniseries – 3 issues – Starts July 24th): Written by John Ridley with art by Alitha Martinez, this miniseries delves into Amanda Waller’s backstory. It reveals a “catastrophic loss” that fuels her vengeance against metahumans, driven by the vow of “NEVER AGAIN.”
Tie-In Issues:
- Batman #150 (July 2nd): This landmark issue features not only the regular story but also an “Absolute Power” tie-in. Writer Chip Zdarsky reunites with artist Mike Hawthorne for a story featuring Batman and Catwoman planning a daring heist to target Amanda Waller.
- Wonder Woman #11 (July 17th): Wonder Woman’s quest for the truth is interrupted by an Amazo robot designed to steal her powers. This “Absolute Power” tie-in written by Tom King, Tony S. Daniel, and Belen Ortega explores if the Justice League Dark can help her.
- Superman #16 (July 17th): This issue by Joshua Williamson with art by Jamal Campbell ties into “Absolute Power” and features a weakened Superman. Injured by the Amazo attack, Superman retreats to the Fortress of Solitude. He must embark on a dangerous mission with Zatanna into the realm of magic.
