What did we like about UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON LIVES! #1?
As avid fans of Universal Monsters, we were thrilled to see Skybound and Image Comics take on this iconic franchise. The character of Kate Marsden is compelling, portraying a flawed yet determined individual driven by her past trauma and the pursuit of justice. Her journey into the heart of Peru sets the stage for a thrilling tale of mystery and suspense. The narrative skillfully weaves together elements of horror and detective fiction, keeping readers engaged from start to finish.
What didn’t we like about UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON LIVES! #1?
While the story holds promise, there is a notable absence of the titular creature in this first issue. With only four parts to the miniseries, the limited presence of the Creature raises concerns about its role in the overall narrative. Similar to past adaptations, such as the Dracula miniseries, we hope future issues will rectify this and provide more focus on the creature itself.
How’s the Art?
Matthew Roberts’s artwork brings the world of Universal Monsters to life with a blend of comic book style and cinematic flair. The character designs are distinct, and the depiction of the Creature from the Black Lagoon is both faithful to the original while adding a touch of menace. The atmospheric settings effectively capture the eerie atmosphere of the story, immersing readers in its dark and foreboding world.

UNIVERSAL MONSTERS: CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON LIVES! #1 lays a solid foundation for what promises to be an intriguing tale of horror and mystery. While the limited presence of the creature is a cause for concern, the engaging protagonist and atmospheric artwork help to compensate for this shortfall. We eagerly anticipate the subsequent issues and hope to see a greater focus on the creature’s role in the story.
