Is It Good?

Issue #3 sorta made sense until it didn’t make sense. In UNBREAKABLE RED SONJA #4, Jim Zub brings clarity to the front for a more enjoyable read and a better picture of the consequences that come with messing with Time. Overall, this issue is a winner.

When last we left Red Sonja and lil’ Red Sonja, they entered the town of mystics who could possibly help, only to find the town completely different from their last visit, and the inhabitants are culty zealots. Now, we find out the mystery woman’s name, what happened to her once she gained control of the magical artifact, and the massive implications for the entire world. Within the space between issues, the story flips from timey wimey confusion to an “oh, I get it now” issue that significantly elevates the stakes.

Therein lies the big positive of this issue. Zub (finally) clarifies the nature and stakes of the villain’s plans, and they’re huge. When a hero stands up against an overwhelming and significantly stronger threat, that’s when legends are made. If Zub can stick the landing on this arc, a bumpy start will have been compensated for, and then some.

The story’s clarity may have taken a long way around to get here, but the art is, thankfully consistent. Garcia, Segala, and Pozza craft a solid set of visuals with clean line work, good action, and excellent coloring application. The minor down point is the generally flat color palette. There’s a lot of brown going here, occasionally broken up with bursts of blue-white streaks of power. It would help to have a little more color variety to give the visuals more interest.

What’s It About?

Check out our UNBREAKABLE RED SONJA #3 review to find out how the Sonjas entered this creepy town.

We begin with Red Sonja and lil’ Red Sonja singled out of a crowd in the town that seems to have been mysteriously built up overnight and populated by a raving cult. We learn, through a flashback, the mystery woman from the first issue is named Tendra, and she used the magical artifact to go to the beginning of creation and install herself as the God of Earth.

Now, the Sonjas are not only fighting against monstrous hunters and crazy zealots but the very god they worship. We conclude the issue with spilled blood, ripped-out hearts, and a do-over.

Final Thoughts

UNBREAKABLE RED SONJA #4 escalates the stakes, the threat level, and the clarity to give the arc a much-needed shot in the arm. Zub names the mystery woman and shows why she’s a dangerous threat to the entire world, and the art team delivers a better-than-serviceable output.

Score: 8/10
