Is It Good?
ULTRAMAX #3 is a solid entry in the series with a lot of action, nuggets of curiosity that suggest there’s more to Travis’s story, and a deadly prison fight. The issue, however, is not without flaws, but more on that in a minute.
The high point in this issue is the nuggets of intrigue Wood and Pickard pepper throughout the issue to hype up the mystery behind Travis’s reputation and the “true” identity of the Warden. The nuggets aren’t confusing, and they work well in the context of the story to do exactly what they should – get the reader to ask forward-thinking questions.
However, the motivations and loyalties of the surrounding prisoners are hard to track. Every prisoner is trying to kill every other prisoner, and it’s confusing as heck trying to figure out who is working for who and why. To say the thread for each prisoner that isn’t Travis is convoluted is an understatement.
Further, the weak point in the issue is the art. This is an action-heavy issue with prison chases/fights and a shootout in the civilian world, but Pickard’s art style and panel compositions simply fall short. You can’t tell what’s happening with the choreography in half the panels, and the other half comes off as flat. With better art execution, this issue would get a much better score, but presented as is, the art looks only a few steps above amateurish.

Find out how Travis got on the wrong side of one of the prison gang leaders in our ULTRAMAX #2 review.
We begin with Travis helping his beaten and stabbed cellmate to the infirmary. When they arrive, Travis waits outside and uses the wait time to make the phone call he couldn’t make in the last issue. He calls Jaimie just in time to hear the apartment is under assault by Baptiste.
Suddenly, the prison alarms go off, signaling a Lockdown. Travis heads back to his cell, but he’s meat with a certain bulldog-headed enforcer who works for Colt. After losing a few of his lieutenants, Colt wants payback, and he seds his bruiser to get revenge.
Meanwhile, Jaimie is locked in a life-or-death struggle against Baptiste. We conclude the issue with death, more death, and an unwanted fix.

Final Thoughts

ULTRAMAX #3 is a serviceable entry in the series with plenty of action and loads of intrigue. That said, the side characters have plot threads more convoluted than a windswept spider’s web, and the art is too weak to pull off the amount of action in this issue.

Which is worse jail or prison?
Prison is generally regarded as worse than jail. Jails are intended as short-term holding facilities for prisoners who’ve been recently been arrested while they await trial or transfer. Prisons are long-term incarceration facilities where prisoners wait out their sentences, sometimes under harsh conditions.
