This issue kicks up the action by magnitudes, compared to issue #1. Verdict: Plenty of robot fighting action to make Grendizer fans happy.

Analysis of UFO Robot Grendizer #2:

First Impressions:

I was desperately hoping UFO Robot Grendizer #2 wouldn’t repeat the shortcoming of issue #1 by keeping the big robot on the back burner. Thankfully, my hopes were met.

Recap:

In UFO Robot Grendizer #1, The issue began with astronauts discovering Vegan radiation on the moon, confirming Earth’s worst fears when a Vegan ship arrived in Japan and unleashed a gigantic Hydragon that cracked Mt. Fuji and devastated the military. A Vegan leader then announced that Vega was a dying world and demanded that Japan’s residents evacuate within seven days so the Vegans could establish a colony there. Meanwhile, Koji and Hikura sought out Dr. Umon to fight the invasion, but it was the discovery of Daisuke’s Fleed helmet – and the revelation that he and his sister were the last survivors of Vega’s destruction – that finally convinced Umon to reactivate Grendizer with the others.

Plot Analysis (SPOILERS):

The issue begins at home base. The team tries on new suits and gets their ships combat-ready. However, the team is beyond rusty, and Duke’s control of Grendizer is not complete. Suddenly, Colonel Kehos arrives with Banta as a hostage to goad Duke into a fight. Duke answers the call, but his guilt over what happened to Vega keeps him from killing Kehos.

Now that Duke, the Prince of Fleed, is confirmed alive, General Arkhen launches a surprise attack on Tokyo. The team is forced into action before they’re ready. Koji, Maria, and the rest focus on civilian rescue, while Duke and Grendizer battle the Hydragon. The issue concludes with some success and too much failure.

How is the story in UFO Robot Grendizer #2?

Xavier Dorison and Denis Bajram’s script greatly improves on the first issue by getting past the setup quickly and engaging in big battles with big robots and big monsters. To be clear, a story should still have all the basics of story structure and foundational elements, but let’s be honest, readers want a Grendizer comic for big robot action, and you get plenty of it here.

Furthermore, Duke is struggling with the trauma of the past and a Grendizer that won’t completely follow his commands, so the action sets up an internal conflict that equals the greater invasion story.

How is the art in UFO Robot Grendizer #2?

The art is excellent. As you can see from the credits, a small team of artists was assembled for the artwork, so it’s difficult to know who to credit for what. That said, the team worked together beautifully to deliver wall-to-wall action, exciting fight choreography, dramatic visual flow, and vibrant colors.

Characters

The character highlights take place on two fronts. First, Duke is clearly struggling. The war has taken a toll on his sense of worthiness to fight, kill, or die for what he believes in, if anything. That trauma adds an interesting wrinkle to the story. Second, Col. Kehos clearly blames Duke for the near-destruction of Vega, so the invasion of Tokyo may or may not be in jeopardy if Kehos can’t contain his need for revenge. Kehos’s uncontrollability creates instant tension.

Originality & Concept Execution

The concept of Grendizer fighting a Vegan monster is not the least bit new for the property, but the concept is made more novel with the introduction of personal, emotional stakes through Duke and Kehos to make the story intriguing.

UFO Robot Grendizer #2 puts the chatter aside and does what Grendizer fans want most – presents BIG robot action. Xavier Dorison and Denis Bajram put exciting battles against the Hydragon at the forefront, and the art team’s presentation is glorious. This issue is a big step up from #2.
