Is It Good?
Just in time for the spooky season, we had a chance to take a gander at TWO GUN TERROR #1, and it’s a perfect horror anthology for anyone who loves a little creepiness with their cowboys. Set in the Old West, each tale draws from modern horror tropes and ancient legends to confront the protagonists with monsters, mayhem, and a little just desserts.
Of the three stories, The Coachman feels the most complete and on par with the best horror anthology series, such as Tales from the Crypt. Craig’s panel composition, especially during the chase scene, is excellent, and the ending is a big wow moment.
The weakest short is Coal Eater. Drawing from ancient Iroquois legends with a twist on the original story is intriguing, but using pictograms instead of dialog was visually and narratively confusing.
In all, this is a fun anthology to get you in the mood for Halloween.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
As with all our anthology reviews, we’ll describe each short briefly, what worked, and what didn’t.
The Coachman
A pair of bank robbers hire a coachman with a legendary reputation for escaping the long arm of the law. When the robbers see the coachman’s special coach perform miraculous feats, their greed will wind up costing them more than the standard fee.
Quick, efficient, and satisfying. The Coachman is a devilish tale that hearkens back to the best anthology series, such as Tales From The Crypt and Tales From The Darkside. The art is sketchy, but the panel composition draws your eye precisely where it needs to go to get the point across.
Coal Eater
An Iroquois wilderness guide leads a group of hunters through the Northern wilderness when their group is attacked by the legendary Flying Head. The hunters use every weapon at their disposal, but it takes a fearless woman to stop the monster.
Modeled after the Iroquois legend, the art depicting the Flying Head is both bizarre and terrifying. However, the story gets off to a bumpy start when the creator decides to use pictograms instead of dialog, which breaks the feel of the setting and creates confusion as some pictogram translations are not clear.
The Sad Ballad of Brash Billy Barton
Brash Billy Barton spends his days riding from town to town to take on the best gunslingers around. One day, Bill enters a town to find the best shooter, and he finds him in the form of one Dead Eye Dil. When Billy challenges Dil to a shootout at dawn, Billy finds out that shooting a man isn’t the same as killing a man.
This is another great short with a clever twist and a little bit of ironic humor. The art is decent enough, and the ending will put a smile on your face.

TWO GUN TERROR #1 is just what Doc Holliday ordered to get you out of the Summer doldrums and into the Halloween spirit. Some shorts in this anthology are stronger than others, but all have a unique theme and end with memorable resolutions.
