Is TRANSFORMERS #5 Good?

In TRANSFORMERS #4, Optimus Prime found himself in a dire situation after being severely injured and losing his arm in issue #3. The Autobots faced a Decepticon onslaught led by Starscream, resulting in a thrilling showdown at a hospital. Ratchet stepped up, reviving a few Autobots temporarily to fend off the Decepticons. The jaw-dropping moment? Optimus replaced his missing arm with none other than Megatron’s.

TRANSFORMERS #5 picks up with Sparky and Optimus having a poignant conversation about the toll of war. Both express a longing for peace, highlighting the emotional depth Daniel Warren Johnson brings to the series. Meanwhile, Ratchet revives Autobots to construct a turbine engine connected to a dam, a direct source for Energon. On the flip side, Starscream is up to some gruesome work at the Ark, dissecting Skywarp’s body to revive fallen Decepticons. The Autobots’ power generation triggers a clash, showcasing Optimus wielding his Megatron-arm, leading to an action-packed stalemate.

The issue concludes with the Autobots making a play to retake the Ark, but their reckless attack is halted when they encounter a “devastating” enemy (hint, hint).

What We Liked About Transformers #5

The issue impresses with its fast-paced, edge-of-your-seat action. Every fight has stakes, especially with humans in the mix, adding a new layer of complexity. The series maintains a balance between Autobot-Decepticon conflict and protecting humans, presenting a fresh challenge for the Autobots. The issue’s cliffhanger is hinted to be devastating, promising an exciting development in the next installment.

6. What We Didn’t Like About Transformers #5

While the issue excels in action, a minor downside is Optimus Prime’s seemingly impulsive decision-making. His hasty charge to reclaim the Ark without ample preparation feels out of character for a seasoned leader and strategist. This minor critique doesn’t overshadow the overall excitement but stands out in an otherwise well-crafted narrative.

7. Art Quality

Daniel Warren Johnson’s art continues to shine with its unique style, injecting dynamicism and energy into every panel. Dramatic moments are skillfully portrayed, such as Optimus carrying a familiar Autobot’s body, creating impactful visual storytelling. However, a few panels appear rushed or haphazard, particularly in close-up shots, slightly detracting from the overall polished art.

TRANSFORMERS #5 is a thrilling, action-packed installment with strong emotional beats and nods to the original Transformers. Daniel Warren Johnson’s departure after issue six is bittersweet, considering his excellent contributions. The series, with its mature edge and consideration for the source material, earns our recommendation.

Score: 9/10
