Is TRAKOVI #2 Good?

Adriean Koleric continues the surreal Canadian/Slavic revenge story about battling villains in TRAKOVI #2. If that combination of flavors doesn’t get your indie heart racing, you might need CPR.

When last we left Trakovi, he was struck by the realization that former villain Wendy did something to Toykov (we don’t know what, yet), savagely beat Pastor Jim, and killed Trakovi’s cousin (by marriage), Boris. Now, the school bus accident Trakovi caused in the first issue is bringing police attention. Before Trakovi and his mates can flee town, Wendy swoops in to deliver a vicious beatdown and divulges why she’s after Trakovi.

If you find the description above a head-scratcher, that’s because this series is, to be blunt, out there. It will serve you greatly to pick up the first issue and read it through a few times first before diving into TRAKOVI #2. Trust us. The series is weird enough as it is without missing a step.

What’s great about TRAKOVI #2? On the plus side, issue #2 is a significant improvement over issue #1 in terms of narrative flow and sequential storytelling. There aren’t any time jumps or flashbacks, so you pick up and move forward right from page one with a strangely eclectic cast of characters engaged in brutal fights.

What’s not so great about TRAKOVI #2? The big oddity from issue #1 doesn’t get answered in issue #2, which is a continual sore spot. Specifically, how did Toykov get mangles into a school bus, and why did Trakovi blow up the school bus instead of killing Toykov directly, especially when Toykov walked away from the explosion later to attend Trakovi’s support group? The school bus was in the wrong place at the wrong time, but Trakovi’s actions after the school bus wreck make no sense.

How’s the art? Weird. As you can see from the samples, Koleric’s art style is heavily stylized, so readers used to clean lines and realistic character anatomy will need to adjust their sensibilities. That said, there’s a creativeness in this art that sets it apart from typical indie fare, so the art has a novel charm.

Check out our TRAKOVI #1 review to get our impressions of an early draft of this series.

We begin with Trakovi, Singh, and Pastor Jim driving through the rain, still holding the box with Boris’s head. The radio pipes out a report that the police are searching for Trakovi’s car in connection to the school bus explosion.

Suddenly, Wendy crashes down on the car hood, wrecking the vehicle. She drags Trakovi out and brutally beats him. We conclude the issue with rage, an explanation, and a new mask.

Final Thoughts

TRAKOVI #2 continues the surreal villain revenge tale when Trakovi encounters his cousin’s murderer. Koleric’s tale of bloody revenge is as bizarre and head-scratching as his art, but there’s a certain indie charm in both that’s worth the purchase on novelty alone.

Score: 6.5/10
