Is TOXX #5 Good?
In the previous issue, Claire and her crew finally reached the mythical Peace Train, a beacon of hope in this desolate world. Unfortunately, Lucien’s mutant hordes had other plans, derailing the train and plunging everything into chaos. Claire narrowly escaped, but the cliffhanger left us wondering: would her encounter with the now-mutated Axel be a reunion or a fight for survival?
TOXX #5 picks up right where the tension left off. Thankfully, despite his monstrous appearance, Axel still recognizes Claire and his love for her remains. They decide to join forces and outrun Lucien’s cannibalistic mutants hot on their trail. Back in Tainer Town, the survivors get a glimmer of hope thanks to a discovery – Claire’s journal.
This issue throws us a few interesting tidbits. We learn about the origins of the apocalypse, hinted at as an ecological disaster linked to the sun and the atmosphere. It’s a detail that leaves us wanting more – a world-building opportunity slightly missed. Additionally, the series continues its trend of keeping the next arc shrouded in mystery – no hints about where the story goes from here.
What did we like about TOXX #5?
This issue offered a surprising dose of hope in a bleak world. The message of love and perseverance, even in the face of unimaginable hardship, shines through. We particularly loved seeing Claire and Axel, an unexpected pairing, come together for a chance at a future for themselves and their child.
What didn’t we like about TOXX #5?
The biggest letdown? The ending. While the chase continues and Tainer Town experiences a positive shift, the overall lack of resolution leaves you hanging. It feels more like a “to be continued” than a satisfying conclusion to the arc.
How’s the Art?
Ben Worrell’s art continues to impress. The mutant designs are appropriately grotesque, and the action sequences are dynamic and engaging. The use of panels effectively guides the reader through the narrative.
