Is It Good?
TORRENT is… supernaturally charming. Presented as an odd body switch through time, TORRENT reads like the solid foundation of a Twilight Zone or Ray Bradbury Theater episode. The ending is a little weak, but on the whole, this is an intriguing urban fantasy from a solo creator.
Leonie O’Moore’s story centers on Zahra with her dog Clover and Arabella – two women from very different times who decide to take a walk on an especially rainy day. Like Alice stepping through the Looking Glass, each accidentally steps through to the other’s time.
For a double-sized+ issue, O’Moore’s story is amazingly brisk. The dialog is sparse but natural, the magical developments each woman learns about her predicament are, at times, supernaturally unsettling, and the story’s momentum builds with the energy of an approaching storm until the big finish.
That said, the weak point of the story is the nebulous conclusion involving a third woman, Marion, who acts as a spiritual bridge between the lost souls. You get the impression O’Moore tries to include a twist or revelatory moment at the end, but it’s too suggestive to make a clear impression.
The first highlight of the story is O’Moore’s central premise, but O’Moore’s art comes in at a close second. The character work is simple yet clean, the color selections and applications are first-rate, and the way O’Moore juxtaposes two characters traveling through similar paths in parallel makes for a cool set of visuals.

What’s It About?
[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]
We begin with Zahra taking her dog Clover for a walk on a rainy Easter Sunday. As the walkers approach the park, Clover gets loose and runs into the woods. Zahra gives chase and is soon startled by a wolf. When Zahra runs into the nearest clearing, she realizes the park has changed.
Years earlier, Arabella decides to take a walk on an especially rainy day near her estate. When she approaches the tree line of the surrounding woods, she sees a small, lost dog searching for its owner. Arabella manages to pick up the dog and ventures into the woods to help in the search. When Arabella enters the next clearing, she notices the park looks very different.
We conclude the issue with a seance, a flash flood, and death.

Final Thoughts

TORRENT is a fascinating fantasy about two women who switch places in time during a magical rainstorm. The plot execution is well done, and O’Moore’s art is impressive for a solo indie offering, but it would have served this story to have a clearer ending to give the adventure a stronger message.
