Is TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #5 Good?
Titan takes a beating and keeps coming back for more in Gary Shipman’s latest entry in the tiniest superhero series from Blood Moon Comics. Packed with gritty action and powerful emotional beats, TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #5 is a surprisingly mature superhero comic. Don’t let the cute mouse fool you.
When last we left Titan, we learned Prof. Nimoy intended to use Titan’s enhanced body as the catalyst to open the doorway back to Titan’s dimension. If it works, the Professor would have the power of interdimensional travel. What the Professor didn’t know is that Asher donned Titan’s costume as a distraction during the previous fight. Now, Titan comes to his senses as the Professor’s portal experiment fails, and Titan makes a dangerous move to stop the Professor and save Asher before it’s too late.
If you’re remotely interested in this series, it helps greatly to read the previous issues before diving in. The comic begins and ends with scenes in progress that require a heap of foreknowledge to understand, so if you pick up this issue cold, you’re probably going to be lost.
What’s great about TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #5? Despite the appearance of the main character, Gary Shipman crafts a deep, emotionally mature chapter when Titan has visions of his parents during his unconscious state and recalls an incident involving his parents under mortal threat. There’s nothing inappropriate for young readers in TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #5, but the imagery takes you to unexpected places.
What’s not so great about TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #5? As mentioned above, Shipman’s writing style is very serialized, so you’d be completely lost if you haven’t fastidiously kept up with every issue. And even if you had, the break between issues is likely to make several of the supporting facts fuzzy. It would have helped to have a recap or some kind of preface page to at least cover the previous broad strokes.
How’s the art? Fantastic. Gary Shipman’s art is arguably as good as or better than his writing. In particular, the hatching work to capture mouse fur, contours, and shading is impressive.

Check out our TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #4 review to find out why Asher and Titan switched places.
We begin with Titan’s mind/spirit/soul floating through the ether when he hears the voice of his parents calling to him. Desperate for help and a connection with his loved ones, Titan follows their voices back to his body and consciousness. When Titan surveys the situation, he sees Professor Nimoy’s experiment failing because Asher is in Titan’s place on the portal machine.
Outraged, Professor Nimoy tosses Asher aside, giving Titan a chance to pull Asher to safety and don his costume once more. Titan emerges from the shadows and implores the Professor to stop his experiment. The Professor snatches Titan up and stabs a hypodermic needle into his chest, hoping to pierce his heart. The Professor’s aim is off, and Titan snaps the needlepoint off to become a handy weapon.
We conclude the issue with a better aim, a painful memory, and inspiration.

TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #5 takes the powerful mouse’s adventures to deep, soulful, emotionally deep places. Gary Shimpan’s story looks like it’s made for kids, but the script tackles surprisingly mature themes, and Shipman’s art is as good as, if not better than, his writing.
