Is It Good?

TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #1 introduces the world to a tiny hero who packs a big punch, and it’s an impressive debut from indie creator Gary Shipman. Filled with super heroics, mature-ish themes, and an intriguing plot, this debut could be another winner from Blood Moon Comics.

On its face, the premise appears simple, but there’s more to it if you pay attention to the details. A sentient mouse from another dimension escapes his slave masters through an unstable portal. When Titan arrives on Earth, he uses his strength and technical prowess for the cause of Light. That sounds about as much Golden Age as you could get, but what elevates this story is the mature struggles Titan experiences, from repressed memories to PTSD-like reactions to sights and sounds stemming from his traumatic escape. In short, Titan’s got issues that make him more complex than your average cape and cowl hero.

That said, there are some oddities that don’t quite get worked out in this first issue. With a second issue on the way, more information may fill in the gaps, but for now, the full understanding of Titan is incomplete. Where do his powers come from? Why does he dress up like Batman? When we catch up with Titan, he’s in the middle of a mission, but we don’t know what he’s after or why. Presumably, all answers are coming, but this first issue feels mildly disjointed.

Regarding the art, it’s a spectacular collection of work. Shipman pulls double duty as the writer and artist, so the script and visuals work together in perfect synchronicity. This is a B&W comic, so heavy emphasis is placed on inks and hatching to provide the mood of each scene, and Shipman nails it. This is a great-looking comic, which is hard to find among indies these days.

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We begin with a flashback to another time and place. Lord Rahsha commands his sentient apes to continue mining to find a portal that will bridge worlds. When the unexplored corners are too small for apes to search, Lord Rahsha forces his sentient mice to follow suit. One mouse, Titan seizes the opportunity to escape Lord Rahsha’s oppression by plunging into the tiny portal.

Now on Earth, Titan dons a mask, cape, and utility belt to bring Light to the Darkness. We find him infiltrating the Ryan Research Center. We conclude the issue with painful memories, repressed memories, and familiar faces.

TITAN: MOUSE OF MIGHT #1 brings a new hero to the city streets of Earth, with great powers, cool gadgets, and an intriguing backstory that begs further exploration. The bits and pieces of Titan’s mission aren’t apparent, so you may come away feeling teased, but there’s certainly enough substance here to get you to come back for more.
