Is It Good?

TIGHTS #2 is surprisingly great. That assessment isn’t meant to be a backhanded compliment by any means. TIGHTS #2 takes the over-traveled path of “deconstructing” superheroes and tells a fresh, compelling, intriguing story about a man pulled deeper into the world of vigilante heroes. Blending crime drama with action, TIGHTS #2 is a better version of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass.

That’s a lot of high praise for an indie comic, so let’s back it up with specifics.

First, Chris Waigand treats the growing collective of vigilante heroes with a believable air of authenticity. Some of the heroes are downtrodden citizens living out a fantasy. Others are just plain crazy. And a select few, such as the Shadownpack, pull off the hero persona by tapping into expert training, gadgets, and a significant amount of funding. The heroes who make it look real are simply a step above military Black Ops soldiers, and it totally works.

Second, Judge Oliver Andrews is a believable character who acts with motivations you can understand, even if you don’t agree with them. He feels fear over the violent world he’s suddenly involved with, and he’s desperate to protect what matters most, especially his wife. He’s a flawed individual, but he’s (mostly) an honest one trying to do the right thing.

Neo and Opacic turn in above-average art for a crowdfunded project. Again, that’s not meant as a backhanded compliment. We see a lot of crowdfunded books, and art is almost always the area where an indie comic falls short. In fairness, this isn’t the best art we’ve ever seen, but it’s solid.

What’s It About?

Check out our TIGHTS #1 review to find out how Judge Oliver Andrews got himself into a tight (*heh*) spot.

When last we left Judge Andrews, he was jumped by a group of Triad killers sent by the Triad boss he put in prison. Now, Andrews is the first name on the Triad boss’s revenge list. Suddenly, a group of armed and masked Black Ops-type figures swoops in to save Andrews from dying alone in a dark alley. The Shadowpack has arrived, and Andrews’s life will never be the same.

Unfortunately, Andrews isn’t as cooperative with his saviors, and he’s whisked away for a private chat. Later, the Shadowpack explain they need the Judge’s help to identify organized crime informants so they can take the city back from the assortment of mobs corrupting every corner of government.

Later, Andrews returns home with a tough decision that could put his life and the life of his wife in grave danger. We conclude the issue with a Monday morning pep talk and help from an old friend.

TIGHTS #2 brings Judge Andrews and the reader deeper into the world of vigilante heroes with a surprisingly fresh take on the grounded superhero genre. The world feels lived-in, the characters are believable, and you can sympathize with the main character’s plight right away.
