Was It Good?

Yes, it was fine. The issue ends this arc with a finale that ties up the loose ends, brings everyone together, and concludes with a message about doing what’s right even when it’s hard to do.

The art for this last issue is consistently good for the subject matter (just slightly above YA), and the aliens are sufficiently cute to convey a comical contrast with the dangerous threat they pose.

The writing is, likewise, on par for a strong but safe YA story. We’ve noted in previous reviews that the violence might be a little excessive for younger viewers, but this issue hits the right mark for action and stakes without getting too bloody for younger audiences.

Overall, it’s a solid end to a solid story with solid art for the YA crowd. Solid!

What’s It About?

[SPOILERS AHEAD – Click here if you just want the score without spoilers]

We pick up with the cliffhanger from the end of the last issue with the Ker royal space force arriving to find Orion. Read our In THEY FELL FROM THE SKY #4 review to get caught up.

Tommy immediately wants to leave their location to find his parents and make sure they’re okay, but Orion warns against it. Reluctantly, Tommy goes along with Orion’s plan to find Myros’s ship and escape Earth so the invaders will leave in pursuit.

There are several panels of straight action that contain no dialog or narration. It’s a good example of letting the art tell the story. Circling around when ray gunfight after another between the Ker military and the rebels, Tommy and friends duck into the back door of the town’s general store.

Two Ker are waiting for them and hold them at gunpoint. before they can be vaporized, Jeb and Jeremy come out of hiding and tip a tall shelf over on top of the Ker, knocking them out. Jeb is quick to remind Tommy that something like this would happen if he continued to befriend Orion. Orion overhears the conversation and appears to take Jeb’s words to heart.

Orion takes a tracker and a better-working translator off the incapacitated Ker to help guide the group to Myros’s ship in the nearby woods. Unfortunately, the group is cut off by another skirmish and they try to create a distraction using stolen flash grenades.

The distraction works long enough for the group to make it past the fight, but before they can reach the ship, an injured Myros is waiting for them. That’s when the Afterschool Special lesson of the issue kicks in.

Myros chastises Orion for running away from assuming his royal duties. If Orion had accepted his responsibility and used his authority to help set the misdeeds of the royal family right, none of this violence would be happening. Myros’s lecture combined with Jeb’s warning convince Orion to step up and put an end to the conflict.

Orion steps out into the open and offers to go back home with the Queen as long as everyone agrees to leave Earth after repairing the damage they’ve done.

We conclude the issue with a broken town on the mend after a heartfelt goodbye.

How Does It End?

Jeb is not as bitter as he used to be. The destruction is blamed on an “earthquake.” Cows can feed chickens.

Final Thoughts

THEY FELL FROM THE SKY #5 is an adequate capper to an entertaining and original series.
