Analysis of THE SCORCHED #36:

Plot:

The Scorched launches an assault on the Vatican to find Jon of York so that he can be reunited with Marc to resurrect Medieval Spawn. The assault ends badly when the Black Brotherhood launches a counterattack that destroys Haunt… or does it?

Artwork and Presentation:

Stephen Segovia’s artwork shines during moments of high-energy action where the characters need to move with fluidity and purpose. That said, Segovia makes clever use of glare and mist to cover for an obvious lack of detail in the backgrounds.

Character Work:

John Layman and Todd McFarlane escalate the drama by portraying a team of strong-willed personalities who don’t easily agree on the next course of action to restore Medieval Spawn. Everyone presents varying degrees of rough exteriors, but each has a unique agenda or motivation as soon as they have a moment to themselves. In other words, the team is a collection of impressively layered characters.

Pacing:

The energy, pacing, and plot development are on point. The twist concerning Haunt’s “death” isn’t a surprise, but it comes at you fast enough that the true reveal still feels well done.

Strongest Point(s):

The biggest positive of this issue is the last page reveal that suggests things are happening. In a series where the team has largely struggled to find their place after the events of the Heaven/Hell War, the image on the last page is a ray of hope.

Weakest Point(s):

As noted above, the lack of detail in the art is a bummer.

THE SCORCHED #36 is a solid issue in the series that finally signals the arrival of progress toward restoring Earth’s Spawn-related characters. John Layman and Todd McFarlane’s script is packed with drama, mostly due to the impressively layered character work, and Stephen Segovia’s action art is very good.

Score: 7.8/10
