Is THE SCORCHED #26 Good?
In the previous issue, we delved into a lengthy flashback about the origins of the Viscerator. We now know that the Viscerator is the Violator’s sister. During a confrontation where the Violator tried to destroy one of the Hellspawns in the past, the Violator failed, and Malbolgia cursed Violator with being the Clown.
Viscerator, quietly whispering in Malbolgia’s’s ear, convinced her to send the Viscerator off to destroy the Hellspawn. Medieval Spawn managed to capture the Viscerator and imprison her in the now-abandoned church. She has recently been freed, ready to wreak havoc against Medieval and take action against the Scorched.
In THE SCORCHED #26, we get a flashback to Jessica Priest, Al Simmons, and Frank Bishop, Black Ops operatives working under Jason Wynn. They were sent to a South American country to deal with a warlord who fell behind on payments to Jason. Instead of looking the other way, Jason sent his operatives in, resulting in a mission that went awry. Frank Bishop’s overzealousness led to Jessica Priest putting him down. Flash forward to today, and the Scorched go on a recruiting drive, attempting to bring in the longtime Image character Haunt. Negotiations are interrupted by the Viscerator and her boss, revealed to be the reincarnated spirit of Frank Bishop. Chaos ensues, leading to a temporary ceasefire when Spawn arrives, announcing a greater war to fight.
What We Liked About The Scorched #26: We appreciate the background information on Frank Bishop. His motivations as a villain make perfect sense, especially considering his grudge against Jessica Priest. The partnership with the Viscerator aligns with the ongoing upheaval in Hell’s leadership, promising a significant battle between powerful teams in the future. The introduction of Haunt into the mix as a potential active member of the Scorched is a welcome cameo. Haunt’s return injects new life into the character, and we’re excited to see where this development leads.
What We Didn’t Like About The Scorched #26: The issue’s conclusion, putting it on pause to deal with the Heaven-Hell War finale, feels a bit abrupt. It disrupts the momentum built by the revelations in this issue. The quick dismissal of the conflict, with Spawn effortlessly handling the situation, leaves the reader wanting more. The anticlimactic ending diminishes the impact of the revelations and potential confrontations set up earlier in the comic.
Art Quality: Stephen Segovia’s art style is a fantastic fit for this material. The lines and colors by Robert Nugent enhance the visual experience, providing dynamic scenes of fighting and action. Haunt’s fighting sequences are a standout, showcasing the character in a way we haven’t seen in a long time. The overall visual appeal, including Spawn’s appearance, contributes to making this a visually engaging comic.

THE SCORCHED #26 delivers great Spawn action, cool cameos, and promises of significant developments in the future. The introduction of a compelling villain with clear motivations adds depth to the storyline. However, the issue’s conclusion, pausing to address the Heaven-Hell War finale, feels like a letdown. It disrupts the flow and leaves the reader wanting more from the immediate storyline. Despite the abrupt ending, the art quality is exceptional, capturing the essence of the characters and the intense action.
